"a party on a sunday night?" noel asks as soon as we get home after finishing our ice cream. "seriously?"

"what party?" mom asks as she approaches the door after hearing us come in.

"a church party to celebrate jesus and the bible."

"oh, how fun! you guys should totally go!"

"we're thinking about it," i say.

as sweet and supportive as our mom is, she's also, unsurprisingly, strict. even though noel and i are 21, it probably wouldn't be a good idea to tell her about a party with alcohol and smoking. on a sunday night at that, the day of the lord!

noel and i sit in the living room, turning on the tv and channel surfing while mom goes back to laundry.

"are we gonna go?" i ask.

"i don't know if i will," noel admits. "a rager just isn't how i'd like to spend my sunday night."

i know in reality, noel doesn't want to go because he's not prepared. he likes to plan out his entire week, down to every nitty gritty detail. that's why he loves being my self-appointed manager. he can lay out a plan and schedule like nobody else can, but god forbid someone spring a surprise on him. you should've seen his reaction to the surprise party his friends threw on his eighteenth birthday.

"that's okay, i won't go either, then."

"oh, casserole, don't be like that."

"like what?"

"don't be a martyr."

"what do you mean?"

"you don't have to ditch it just because i'm going to. i'm sure you'll know a couple people there and you'll have fun. you're more of a party person than i am, anyway."

i nod my head. he's not wrong.

"but my partner in crime isn't gonna be there," i say with a frown.

"oh so i'm your partner in crime now, but i'm your annoying big brother when i say you can't meet some random guy at an in n out at 11 pm?"

"no. you're my annoying twin brother then."

"i was only looking out for you. and good thing i did, didn't he end up being a drug dealer or something?"

"yeah. he got arrested." i comb my fingers through my matted hair as noel continues to flip through channels.

"are you not phased by that?"

"it takes a lot to phase me."

"and someone being incarcerated isn't 'a lot' in your book?"

"hey, i like this show!" i change the subject when i see that golden girls is on.

"you would like this show." noel scoffs with a smile.

sunday night rolls around quicker than expected, and i still can't get noel to change his mind about going to the party. but he does offer to drive me there and pick me up when i get bored.

i stand in front of my floor length mirror, dusting off my short, skin tight, black dress as i do. i'm contemplating between wearing black docs and black converse, with one of each shoe on both of my feet.

"i'm telling you, the docs look better," noel says, glancing up from his phone. "the converse are ugly and run down, anyway."

"brand new converse are weird to look at," i counter. "plus, they look less formal."
