"there's our last couple," the host says as two people approach us from behind. "now that everyone is here, i'll explain what's going on." she takes out a clipboard with a paper full of bullet points on it.
"the panel lasts 30 minutes. it'll all be questions from the audience. the audience will be given a sheet of paper that says they can not ask questions about any of the following topics: your sex life, past exes, your plans for the future and/or marriage, relationship insecurities, your least favorite thing about your partner, if the relationship is a PR stunt, and any other question that they wouldn't feel comfortable asking their grandma." (i mentally breathe a sigh of relief after hearing about the "no asking about PR" rule). "if you deem any question that is not listed as unacceptable, you have a choice to skip it. i repeat, you are not obligated to answer anything that you feel uncomfortable answering. the audience might single out a couple for a question, or might ask to all three of you. if the question is meant for the group, then we answer from right to left, staring with lizzie and joel, then blaire and ludwig, then sapnap and cassia. if one couple answers but you are uncomfortable answering, you are allowed to skip the question. the panel is being recorded and live streamed on youtube, and the live stream will be saved as a video to the twitch con youtube channel. so please try not to embarrass yourselves, as there is a slim to none chance that the youtube admin would ever delete the video." she huffs. "any questions?"
the three couples remain silent. after that long-winded explanation, none of us dare to speak up.
"cool." she checks behind the curtain. "the room is filling up pretty quickly. i'd start mentally preparing if i were you guys- you're on in five. good luck!" she leaves us be and we all turn to our partners.
"you nervous?" sapnap asks.
"nah," i reply.
"what are you thinking about?"
"just wondering if we're allowed to skip questions. i don't think she went over that," i tease with a smile. sapnap rolls his eyes.
"that did seem to be drilled into our heads rather harshly. but i feel like skipping questions is going to make people suspicious or read into stuff. it's probably best to avoid skipping questions unless you're really uncomfortable."
"i doubt people would ask such personal, weird stuff though, right? they have common sense, surely?" sapnap sighs as if a flashback has just gone through his head.
"you'd be surprised..."
a couple minutes pass and the same host walks on stage. cheers can be heard echoing throughout the room.
"hi everyone!" she says, her voice a lot more joyous than it was when she was telling us the rules. "wow, there are a lot of you here right now! all the seats are taken and some of you are even leaning against the wall or sitting on the floor... that's impressive."
a bead of sweat trickles down my neck. there's that many people?
"i hope you all have read the information on the papers in front of you. if you haven't, please do so now. those are questions that are deemed unacceptable to ask. if anyone asks anything along those lines, you will be removed from the panel and possibly removed from the convention entirely. having respect for our streamers is key. is that understood?"
murmurs of "yes" and loud cheers are heard from the crowd.
"perfect!" the host says. "then without further ado, let me introduce our couples! first on deck is... ldshadowlady and smallishbeans!"
the pink haired youtuber and her husband walk out from behind the curtain, waving to the crowd as they do. their cheers are loud and excited- probably from fans that have been watching them since they started dating. i clap for them too, i've been watching them for just as long.
