CHAPTER 40
[ New Orleans, 2012 ]

It always started in the same manner. Elijah and Georgia would be taking their time, walking through the busy, narrow streets of a city unknown to them. They would smile and laugh as they enjoyed each others company, on some occasions they held hands and kissed as they stopped to enjoy the scenery. Elijah felt content as he held her close, he felt truly happy and he knew that she did as well. It was a strange experience, he found it hard to describe but it felt as if they were one, they were no longer separate entities.

Then she would begin to walk ahead, their hands outreaching as she raced ahead. The crowd would absorb them, pulling them slowly from one another. He would race after her but no matter how hard he tried he never found her and they would become those separate entities again. It was no longer Georgia and Elijah, it was just Elijah - stood frantic while hoards of people rushed past him.

Until the crowd disappeared and within an arms length stood Georgia, enveloped in the arms of his father. Her eyes swam with fear, her body trembling as he held the white oak stake to her throat in order to keep her in place. Elijah would try and rush forward, but he never seemed able to. She would scream and call out his name but even as her cries became horrifying, haunting sobs, he remained stationary. Unable to move, forced to simply watch as Mikael drank from her freely. Elijah himself would cry as he watched her limbs droop, her face fall and her body be so utterly discarded by Mikael as he dropped her to the floor, stepping over her as if she was nothing.

It always ended in the same manner too, with Elijah begging his father to put him out of his misery. Because without her, he had no reason to live and Elijah wasn't entirely sure what terrified him more - the thought of losing her or the vulnerability of being unable to live without her. He knew then that he was in far too deep. He knew then he needed to take a step back before it killed him, or worse - her.

He had woken up in the same frantic manner every morning since the collapse of the other side and the return of his father. While his fathers influence dissipated after the initial dream, the haunting images had remained with him and repeated every night since. It had been a horrifying 3 months.

He sighed as he pulled himself from bed, carefully choosing a pressed suit from his closet before heading downstairs where Hayley and Klaus were bickering in the courtyard. "...but I had no hand in this"

"Hmm. Well, then, I guess we have Elijah to thank?" Hayley shrugged, eating some fruit from the meticulously arranged table.

"This wasn't my doing..." he frowned, stepping off of the last step and towards them.

Hayley looked between the brothers. "Then, where did this all come from?"

The silver lid which sat in the centre of the platter suddenly began to rattle, causing Hayley to jump in fright. Klaus raised an eyebrow as he reached out to remove the lid of the platter, releasing two starlings into the open air of the compound.
