CHAPTER 44
[ New Orleans, 2012 ]

Klaus' phone rang out as he fed on the bodies that Mikael had left for him within the woods. He rolled his eyes as he picked up the phone "Uh, I'm a tad busy. What is it, Hayley?"

"Something has happened to Elijah. He was supposed to be our decoy last night, and now he's vanished. There's blood everywhere- werewolf and vampire. There's a trail. I need you to help me track it." She sighed, looking around at the bloodshed and carnage that had occurred the night before.

"Well, as much as I might like to help you find my brother, I have more pressing matters as the moment." He grunted as he kicked a wolf, who was clinging to life, backwards as they attempted to crawl away.

Hayley scoffed. "What's more important than your own brother?"

"My life? Davina had Mikael on a magical leash, and it broke. Now Mikael has Tunde's blade, the white oak stake, and Georgia." Marcel had originally been with her, but had ran off in order to help Georgia and things began to click as Hayley pieced the information together.

"Marcel is going to help her... she's at some rundown factory. Klaus he won't stand a chance" Hayley frowned deeply as he sighed out irritatedly.

"I'm gonna get her back." He ran a bloody hand through his hair as he began to walk through the woods. "If she dies on my watch my brother will kill me himself"

"Yeah..." Klaus sighed as he realised what he had said.

"Meet me there little wolf and then, I'm gonna end this. Either Mikael or I will be ash by day's end."

Elijah was stilled chained up within the mausoleum, growing more irritated with each passing second. "You're distorting my memories! It was you who killed Tatia!"

"Oh, I used her blood to bind the spell that suppressed Niklaus' werewolf aspect. But, by the time you brought her to me, she was already dead." He looked at her in horror and disbelief. Esther could see his tough armour cracking.

"You can't rewrite history"

"No, I cannot. And I did not. Not until I had your consent." She sighed, looking up at him. "When you became yourself again, you brought her to me."

He saw himself, carrying her limp body in his arms. "But, too late. I told you you were a good son, to let me take care of it. That I could help make it all go away."

His mother took the body, he was overwhelmed to the point of numbness, his blood-smeared face held no emotion. He fell to his knees in horror as Esther closed the large, red wooden door of his childhood home. "And then, I said to you, 'You will not suffer from this memory, or be tormented from the guilt of your misdeed. What goes behind that door shall stay there and be forgotten.' I told you to clean yourself up. That if you were clean, no one would know what you are or what you'd done."

"And you did exactly that... and more. You created a place in your mind to put your victims. You began to believe that as long as your suit was immaculate and your hands clean, you could look in the mirror and tell yourself it's all okay. No one need know what's behind that red door." His mind brought him back to his horrifying nightmare, once again he was chasing his Georgia - his sweet, joyful Georgia down that godforsaken corridor. Once again watching as she threw herself into the door in sheer terror.

"But, a thousand years is a long time, Elijah. And a place meant to hold one unforgivable sin is now full to bursting with your most monstrous deeds." Esther's voice was soft and delicate despite the depth of her words.
