"It's show time!" A deep Bulgarian accent shouted over the helicopter blades whirring around. I climbed up and set myself next to my now former team member.
"It's going to be weird around here without you Sarg!" He yelled through his headset.
"You'll be fine without me Williams." I yelled back and gave him a firm pat on the shoulder.
Williams begged to see me off to my new base. He hounded our superiors to no end just to say goodbye. Williams was apart of my team for two years as a transfer from the United States. He served well under me but I know he'll do fine under new leadership.
The helicopter ride wasn't long, the base was a few hours away by car but, was also in total seclusion. Approximately three hundred klicks away from my previous base the only information I knew about this base was it's harsh winters.
The helicopter descended, landing in a courtyard with four fully armored soldiers standing shoulder to shoulder. I stripped off the headset grabbing my small bag of belongings and exited the aircraft. I wore a very light set of armor of just a solid chest plate bearing a black long sleeve shirt underneath with standard black cargo pants, black boots and lastly a black balaclava exposing my eyes and forehead.
The helicopter soon took off with Williams in tow as he waved his goodbyes. My attention turned to the four men in front of me as another man approached significantly taller than the rest.
"Ahhh.. Marek glad you decided to finally join us." A husky British voice joked with his hand extended.
"Glad to be here." I replied with a nod completing the handshake.
"Gentlemen, this is Anastasia Marek. Also.. known as Wendigo." The British man chuckled.
The men did not offer their hands to welcome me. Their glares were apparent in their disapproval of my presence. I was used to it, being a woman in the military was not exactly easy and stirred up a lot of hatred by others who felt they were more deserving of my rank and titles.
"My name is Charlie Evans, everybody calls me Merlin." Merlin said. "And this is Scorpion, Snowden, Hyde, and Midas." He added.
I nodded my head at them as their eyes continued to pierce into me through their hard stares. I held my bag in both hands behind my back waiting for one of them to say at least a word before Merlin broke the silence again.
"Let's get you to your dorm." Merlin turned his head to me as he turned towards the four other men. "You all are dismissed." He told them and instantly they started off as their mumbled voices gossiped together. I followed Merlin through the building keeping my eyes forward as other passing through held their glances on me. I was small, I knew that. Standing at a whopping five-three in height with a petite build always got unwanted comments from everyone. Merlin broke my thoughts as he opened the door to a bare room with minimal and basic furnitures.
"This is you. This is your space, do with it what you will. Dinner is in a couple hours and you can meet the rest of the command staff then." He said closing the door behind him. I looked around the room, it came accompanied with a small fridge and kitchenette, a loveseat microfiber material couch and, a twin bed with no doubt the thinnest sheets in the world. I dropped my bag at the foot of the bed as I shed my armor plate and boots falling back on the bed. It felt like I was starting all over again as the 'new guy.'
