When they took her it felt like the ground started quaking beneath Phantom's feet. Only a few of us saw what I saw. He was in love with her. Seeing her with Kayo hurt him and made him jealous right to his core.
I've overheard how he speaks about her to his brother Merlin before. Infatuation, greed, and fire spewed from his mouth that night. He wanted so bad to make her his.
The night we found her his eyes flooded with so much grief. He despised having to leave her behind but it's the welfare of the company over anything. Even if that meant leaving someone behind. Just like Midas' body, never recovered.
The state of Ana when we set eyes on her was horrific. Malnourished. Battered beyond belief. Phantom seemed like he wanted to drop to his knees right then and there. Even I felt weak inside seeing her like that.
However, now that she's returned to us it's even worse. No one knew she was growing life inside of her.. was. Kayo's meltdown was warranted but Phantom almost made it seem like he needed to man up.
I watched. I listened. But I never said a word. Comforting others with humor is usually my key to success but it proved difficulty when you struggle with speaking the same way everyone else does.
"Wolf." A gruff voice called out to me.
"Huh?" I asked breaking my thoughts.
"Do you want to see her? Jonesy has finished.. tending to her." I looked over to find Phantom standing in the doorway to the infirmary.
"I.. don't want to.. uh.." I stumbled trying to find the right words.
"Interrupt? Kayo won't mind." He says motioning for me to follow him inside.
I sighed to myself trailing behind him. Once he moved out of my view I saw Kayo sitting in the chair too small for his stature, his knees touching the floor. He clutched her hand tightly, keeping it firmly pressed against his lips. One thing almost drew my attention away from the sight of her.. Kayo without his helmet and mask.
"Kayo?" I said softly.
He didn't turn to look at me. He didn't take his eyes off her.
"It's alright. You can come in." He said muffled with her hand covering his mouth.
I slowly walked up to her bedside. Freshly stitched and cleansed wounds coated her body in an inhumane way. Barbaric. Animalistic. Almost as if she was mauled.
"Is she still not awake?" I asked, my voice breaking up.
"Jonesy had to sedate her. She tried to fight him." Kayo grumbled.
"She'll wake up soon. The sedation only lasts a couple of hours and it took almost that long to.. fix her." Jonesy chimed in checking his watch.
Jonesy started clearing away all the bloody utensils and gauze left behind on his tray. Discarding his gloves in the process.
"This is the call button. Press it if you need me. She might be fucked up still when she wakes up. I don't want to have to restitch her." He sighs pointing to the wall where the red button mounted extended out. Kayo didn't acknowledge him but I offered a reassuring nod in his place. I watched Jonesy leave, shutting the door softly behind him. Phantom stayed in the corner straddling the same kind of metal chair, also too big for his stature.
"Kayo you can take off her binds. Jonesy is gone." Phantom piped up from the corner.
He shook his head. Hardly wanting to speak words.
"I don't want her to hurt herself." Kayo said solemnly.
Silence hung in the air for quite some time. Phantom let his head rest against the top rail of the chair. Kayo kept his grip on Ana's hand, never taking his eyes off her.
The silence was broken by the soft metal clinks from the restraints echoing through the room.
