Recap:
"Everything." He breathed, and Max smirked. Seriously, I am going to beat the living shit out of him if he keeps doing that. His pretty face wouldn't be that pretty anymore.
Before I could even start my story, my name was called.
"Miss. Sherrington?" a doctor called. I looked at the boys, and excused myself.
"Yes, that would be me." I smiled a little when I said that. The doctor had an unreadable expression on his face, so I didn't know what to think.
"The operation was..."
"Successful." the doctor breathed out. It felt like a huge weight was lifted off of my chest, and I smiled brightly.
"He is still a little weak, but you can see him if you want." the doctor smiled a little and walked away.
I turned around with a huge smile on my face, and walked back to Nate and Max."The operation was successful! Ch-Samuel lives!" I exclaimed happily.
Shit, I almost let it slip.
I need to choose my words wisely.
They didn't seem to notice my slip, and I was thankful for their unawareness. They both smiled a little, and honestly, Max looked a lot better when he smiled, and not smirked. I thought back at the moment we found Charlie.
And then it clicked.
Why didn't the dumbass had a bulletproof vest?
Anger came into my eyes when I looked at Nate.
"Nate..." I slowly begun. "Could you explain to me why Samuel didn't have a bulletproof vest?" His eyes widened, and then went back to normal.
"I thought Mark had gave him the vest, it isn't my job to do that." he looked a bit guilty, and that look told me that he knew.
He knew Charlie didn't had a vest, and he knew Mark didn't gave him one.
He just knew, but he told nothing.
What a good beginning of our friendship.I looked back at Nate, and I am sure he saw the anger in my eyes, because he turned away.
Max looked at me with questioning eyes, and I shot him the finger. Why did all the men have to be so stupid?
Can't they just be normal, and help each other for a moment."If you'll excuse me, I want to see my friend right now, you can go. Thank you for helping me Nate, but this was a one time thing. We wouldn't be friends anyway." I said. I didn't want to be mean, but how can you know something, and don't say it?
A pained look crossed Nate's eyes, but that quickly changed back to normal, and he nodded at me. After that, he walked away, out of the hospital.
Max looked at me with a open mouth, and I just stood there. When Max finally realized what happened, he came towards me, and pinned me to the wall.
"Are you stupid? That guy saved your friends life! How can you be so heartless?" he spat at my way. His eyes were radiating anger, and I felt really small against his big body.
"He knew he didn't have something to protect himself! Why didn't he say something?" I exclaimed. Max's fist hit the wall behind me, and I made a mental note to not piss him off.
"Maybe you should ask yourself why Samuel didn't say he didn't have anything. He asked to not give him something when we offered him. Something about pride, I don't know, but if it wasn't for Nathaniel, your friend would be dead now." and with those words, he let me go and walked away.
I stared at his back when he turned around again. He looked me straight in the eyes when he said the next words. "I may be a dick sometimes, but friendship is important. You better make friends, or you won't survive one day in this hell hole." With that said, he turned away, and walked out of the hospital, following Nate.
What did I do?
~
I walked into Charlie's room with a hand on my heart. His whole stomach was wrapped up, and his face was pale.
He looked horrible.
I slowly walked towards him, and sat down next to his bed. I grabbed his hand and he smiled.
"Hey" he whispered. His voice was hoarse and soft, but I heard him.
"Hey." I said while smiling. "How are you feeling, you dumbass?" his smile grew wider and he began to laugh, but then he winced in pain and stopped.
"I've had better days." I still held his cold hand, and as if he could read my thoughts, he looked down at our hands, and a longing look came on his face.
He looked back at me, and the love I saw in his eyes made my heart swell.
"Why didn't you want protection?" I blurted out. I just had to ruin the moment.
His eyes grew cold again, but his brown eyes still looked at me.
"I don't know." he muttered.
"What do you mean?" I asked again. Did he want to be dead?
"Leave it Chloe, you wouldn't understand." he sighed and looked away. I felt a pang of hurt in my chest, and I felt the tears boiling up. I thought I lost him, can't I be worried?
"Why?" I simply asked. I didn't know why I asked, because I was afraid of the answer.
"Dammit Chloe! Leave it alone I said." Charlie screamed. Or well, tried to scream. The tears became too much, and I softly pulled my hands out of his. He looked back at me again, and his eyes widened when he saw me crying.
"Chloe, I didn't mean-" he started, but I cut him off.
"Leave it Charlie" I whispered, before I left the room. He called my name, but my vision was blurred before my eyes, and I didn't want to listen. I had to leave it, so I left.
He asked for it, it was his wish. I know he didn't mean it, but still. I was just trying to be nice.
This soft side of me needed to go away. I had only one mission in front of me, and there could be no distractions.
But Charlie is still my friend, and I only wanted to know what was going on.
So much for trying to help him.
So much for saving your him.
So much for friendship.
