Nicholas and I didn't waste a single minute more. We hurriedly left the ranch, got home, packed our bags, and returned to Roosevelt.
We went straight to the hospital and met with the doctor.
"Where is she? What happened to her?" Nicholas asked the doctor.
"She is unconscious right now. The man who rushed her in was the one who hit her. According to him, she came out of nowhere. We did everything we could to save the baby, but it was too late." The doctor explained to Nicholas. I could sense the pain and anger he was feeling. It was emitting off of him like an invisible smoke.
"Take me to her," he ordered the doctor, his voice unmistakably stern.
She nodded and led us both to the room where she was. My heart broke at the sight of her as she lay unconscious on the bed.
She was covered in stitches and connected to all sorts of machines and drips. Her once-round bump had now flattened.Nicholas didn't move past the door. He just stood there and watched her with pain-filled eyes. I had never seen him like that ever since I met him.
After looking at her for a few more minutes, he turned around and left. I was worried about him so I followed him immediately. He remained in the hallway, pacing back and forth. I had no idea what I could possibly say or do to comfort him, I was so scared of saying the wrong words.
"Nicholas," I started, he didn't answer me or stop pacing, not that I expected him to.
"You have to calm down," I tried to tell him. That didn't work, I started thinking of my next words when suddenly Nicholas punched the wall, hard. I flinched, not expecting his outburst.
"What was she doing outside? Why was she alone? I told her not to go..." he punched the wall again "...anywhere without her maid or driver!"
"Nicholas," I called in horror as I froze, watching him punch furiously at the wall.
"Why did she have to be so..." he punched again, "...careless with my baby. "
I rushed over to him and held his hand to stop him from repeating his actions. The doctor also came out of the room, probably hearing what was going on.
"Nicholas, this isn't going to help," I told him.
"Please calm down. It is not over yet,""No, it isn't," he said, looking at me. I thought he was beginning to calm down, and so I felt relieved, but then he turned to the doctor and asked...
"Where's the man who did this?"
"I told him to wait in the reception," she answered. I looked at her and then at him, extremely worried as she so easily gave that answer.
Nicholas started walking in the direction of the reception. My eyes widened in shock as I realised what he might be planning to do. So once again, I followed him.
We came out to the reception, and Nicholas scanned the room until his eyes landed on the young man who seemed afraid and uncomfortable. He matched angrily up to him.
"You did this! Why did you do this?" Nicholas immediately grabbed the man by his shirt. He didn't even care that he was causing a scene.
