Part 21 - Better Together

Josephine

I wake up and I hear weird noises around me. My arm is heavy and my vision is blurry in the beginning. But then, everything becomes clear. I'm in a sterile hospital room, dressed with a pink gown. No one is around me and I start to panic. The machines start to sound weirder and a few moments later, a nurse comes in.

"Miss, calm down. You are okay. You are safe." She takes my hand.

"What happened?"

"Your fiancée brought you in this state. You were kidnapped and tied, but you are fine."

"The baby. The baby is fine?"

"Yes, your pregnancy is totally well, dear."

"Thank God!" I feel a tear on my cheek and I quickly wipe it away. "Where is he?"

"He went to buy some food, but he will be back soon."

"Thank you."

"Do you want to see our OB to know more about your pregnancy?"

"Yes, please."

"Alright, then. I will schedule with our doctor and I'll come after you, okay?"

"Thank you."

The nurse leaves and I try to move, try to get up, but I'm too weak. I don't know for how long I was unconscious. I just know that at some point I hear a gunshot and I saw Hero. He took me out and then everything blacked out.

He walks in the room and I stat to cry. He quickly let the bag on the table and he comes next to me.

"Hey, you are safe, now." He hugs me.

"I know." Does he know about everything? "Hero?"

"Yes, blondie?"

"Did you find out?"

"Huh? What should I find out? They hurt you?"

"No, no, no. They didn't even touch me. But the doctors didn't tell you anything?"

"No, she just told me you are not in danger."

"Hero... I'm pregnant."

"What?"

"We're having a baby." I smile as I spot a smile on his face.

"You are pregnant?"

"I am pregnant. We're having a baby. We are going to be parents."

"Jesus!" He smiles and he hugs me. "I love you, blondie."

"And I love you."

"We're leaving tomorrow."

"What?"

"We are not safe here, blondie. Not now when a baby is on the way. I planned it before. We're going to New York, the apartment is on my friend's name, and they won't find us."

"But I can't let my work away, Hardin!"

"We are not safe in this place, Josephine."

"I don't want to leave. We can tell them I am pregnant and maybe they will stop this fight."

"I don't think they will. We're not married. From their point of view, our child is a bastard."

"Then let's get married!"

"Jo, please... Stop. We have to leave. The fact that I saved you will make them angrier."

"I don't know... I don't want to leave everything here, Hero..."

"I know, me neither, but you and the baby are the most important in this moment."

"So... It's better if we leave?"

"Yes. I want what's the best for you, blondie."

"I know. I'm sorry." I lean on to hug him.

We're interrupted by the nurse who comes in with a wheelchair.

Nurse: "Our doctor is ready to see you."

Hero: "Doctor? Is everything alright?"

Nurse: "You are the father?"

Hero: "I am."

Nurse: "I scheduled an appointment with our OB. Just to be sure everything is alright due she found out recently."

Hero: "Oh, alright."

Jo: "He can come with me?"

Nurse: "Of course!"

The nurse and Hero helps me to get on the wheelchair, then we go to the 4th floor to see the doctor.

Nurse: "Doctor Miles, this is the patient I was talking about."

Dr. Miles: "Thank you." She smiles and the nurse leaves. "Hello. I'm Riley Miles and I will be your doctor today. As the nurse told me, you are pregnant, right?"

Jo: "Yes. I found out a few days ago."

Dr. Miles: "Can I know the first day of your last period?"

Jo: "I don't know. I always had a chaotic period."

Dr. Miles: "Okay, that's alright. Any symptoms?"

Jo: "Nausea. I thought it was just food poisoning, but I did some tests and my results came positive for pregnancy."

Dr. Miles: "Good. Let's do an ultrasound to see what's inside, okay?"

Jo: "Yeah."

Dr. Miles: "As I'm guessing is a little pregnancy, I'll perform an internal ultrasound, okay?"

Jo: "Okay."

We go to the other room and the doctor starts the ultrasound. Hero sits on my right, keeping my hand tight.

Dr. Miles: "Five weeks and one day. As I can see, the embryo is sticked well of your uterus. The dimensions are perfect for this age and from this ultrasound, nothing seems wrong. And now, the heartbeat." She presses a button and we start to hear our baby's heartbeat.

I immediately start to cry silently. I knew having a baby is emotional, but when you are in the position of being a mother and hearing the baby's heartbeat for the first time is magical. I look at Hero and he watches me with tears in his eyes. We know each other only for a few months, but we're happier together. We're better together.

Dr. Miles: "A pretty strong heartbeat." She smiles. "After my calculations your due date is around June 15th. But we can talk about this later, if you want of course."

Hero: "I'm sorry, doctor. But we're leaving tomorrow to New York."

Dr. Miles: "That's alright. I can recommend you some doctors there."

Jo: "That would be perfect."

After talking for a little while with the doctor, me and Hero go back to my room.

"I'm going to ask for the discharge papers, so we can go home and pack some clothes. We're going to stay there for a while, but we will take only some things."

"Okay..."

Half an hour later, me and Hardin are on our way to my apartment. As we arrive, I see Jake's car outside. Shit. I'm in trouble. A big trouble.

"Hero, Jake is there. He can't see us."

"Shit. What the fuck is he doing here?"

"I have no idea... What do we do now?"

"I think I have an idea. I will let you here and you will walk there. You are telling him that you will be going in a business trip. A teambuilding in a surprise destination, so you don't know where you go. And make him to leave, okay? While you get away from him, I'm going to my place to pack some clothes."

"But I don't want to be alone!"

"I trust your brother. He won't hurt you and if someone is bothering you, he will be there. I will text you as soon as I left my place, okay?"

"Okay."

"I love you." He caresses my cheek.

"I love you."
