Chapter 21

*** The next morning: I woke up early to make Nick breakfast before I had to leave for work, enjoying the last half hour of peace and quiet because I knew that today could possibly be a dreadful day due to having to face Danny. "You made breakfast?"

I looked at Nick and nodded. "I did."

He smiled and put Maverick in his highchair. "I know you have to go to work, I'll feed him."

"Are you sure?"

"Positive. Go get dressed. Did you eat?"

"Yeah, I already had a small plate."

I went to my bedroom and fished through my closet, grabbing a pair of black heels and a white blouse and black skirt. I applied the last bit of my makeup and finished my hair before grabbing my purse and went back downstairs.

"I'll be home around 5."

I went over to Maverick and kissed his forehead before hugging Nick. "I'll be home later."

"Have a good day, sis."

"Thank you."

I got in my car and drove to work, dreading having to see Danny's face.

Once I arrived at work, I got out of my car and went inside, meeting Micah in the break room. "Hey, how was your weekend?"

"Not bad."

"So, are you and Nico a thing now?"

"No."

"Did he ask?"

"Yeah."

"And you said no?"

"I don't want to give him another chance."

"Oh."

"I refuse to allow another man to hurt me again."

"Why, what happened?"

"He was cheating on me."

"Really?"

"Yeah for a few months. I called him out on it and now he's all pissed off, and I feel like he's blaming me for things that I never did."

"What an asshole."

"I know and now he thinks that he can just come back into my life expecting me to forgive him? Hell no."

"What about Danny?"

"I am still hurt but I just can't fully cut Danny out of my life as much as I should."

"The only time you'll see him is here and whenever he picks Maverick up."

"Still. I hate the sly bastard, but I know how I truly feel about him."

"I get it, but you need to focus on your son and your job."

"Easier said than done, Micah."

"Look, I know you're still in love with him. But the only thing that will happen is heartbreak and I refuse to see Danny break your heart."

"It is really hard to let go."

"I know, but you are strong, Val. It may take a while to get over him, but you'll get through this."

If only I could convince myself that Micah was right. Despite Nico's several attempts to try and get back with me, I wanted Danny at the end of the day. Period.
