"You can take as long as you would like to make the decision, but I think you should quit your job."

"What?"

"I hate to see you facing Danny and Katy every day, and I honestly think you would be happier."

"Possibly, but I can't just leave."

"Like I said, take your time to make the decision. But I have an alternative option for you."

"Which is?"

"I know it would be a hard decision, but I am close with the CEO at a graphic design company in Los Angeles and I know he could easily get you a job."

"What are you trying to say?"

"Move to California."

"What?"

"It's a three-hour flight. Your family could easily come and visit whenever they would like."

"Why would you want to do that with me?"

"Because you are my fiancé. That's why."

"I need time to think about it."

"Of course."

After dinner ended, I sat in my room trying to figure out what to do. Having a fresh start would be great, but would I want to take my children and leave?

*** One month later: "Have you made your mind up yet?"

"No, but I spoke to Nick about it."

"And?"

"He said I should go for it."

"How are the kids?"

"Good but to be quite honest, I haven't felt like myself lately."

Micah raised her eyebrows. "What do you mean?"

"I don't know. On top of splitting up with Danny, the miscarriage has taken a mental toll on me."

"Well, what's going on?"

"I've been thinking about seeing a grief therapist. Maybe it will help me."

"Have you spoken to Tom about it?"

"No."

"Well, don't you think that he should know?"

"Probably but I don't feel like bothering him."

"Why would it bother him? I am sure that it would be concerning."

"I've been taking depression medication for it."

"Without a doctor's permission?"

"I don't really want to talk about it."

"Val, you need to speak to a doctor before you start self-medicating yourself."

"I know."

"I'm serious, you need to."

"If it satisfies you, I'll schedule an appointment."

"I just don't want you to risk taking a medication that could potentially harm you."

Nodding, I called Dr. Lapham for an appointment. "I'm going in after work."

"Good. I just want you to be safe, Val."

"Thanks, Micah."

I hated going to doctor appointments, but this was the only way that I could truly find out what has been going on with me.
