A/n: in this christopher doesn't have anencephaly and he's born healthy

'Can we go in yet?' I begged the nurse outside Amelias room. In there is my godson and I'm going to be the first to see him, no matter how much Addison or Charlotte fights me. 'Just one of you. She doesn't want to be overwhelmed.' The nurse says. 'Dibs!' I whisper yell. Charlotte groans in frustration as I silently slip through the door.

'How are you?' I ask gently, stepping closer to Amelia. 'He's beautiful.' She responds in awe. 'Do you want to hold him?' She offers, putting her hands out. 'Of course.' I take the baby in my arms and cradle him. 'What's his name?' I rock him slowly, swaying on my feet. 'Christopher Ryan Shepherd.' Amelia answers. 'He's beautiful.' I place him back in his cot while Addison and Charlotte walk in.

'Can we see him?' Charlotte asks. 'Charlotte, dont be so rude!' Addison scolds. 'Sorry,' Charlotte corrects. 'Can we please see him?' She shoots a glare at Addison. 'Of course. You'll have to get him yourself though. I can't reach. Where are the others?' Amelia asks while Addison picks up Christopher. 'They're outside in the waiting room. Cooper fell asleep.' Charlotte says, waiting impatiently for her turn with the baby. 'Speaking of sleep, I'm going to go home soon. Do you need anything else?' I turn to Amelia. 'No, but you should wake Cooper, he wanted to see he baby.' I nod, and turn to leave the room.

Amelias my younger sister, technically. The Shepherds took me in when we were both 8. I was a foster kid. I had an older brother, but my biological parents left pills on the table, and he took them. He overdosed and I was taken away. Amelia and I were very close. We shared a room, clothes, money. We even had joint birthday parties because I was born two weeks before her. We went to the same school for medicine and later both joined the practice in L.A. The rest of our family lost most contact with her after she became addicted to oxy, but I stayed by her. I was the first person to know when she was pregnant, and I was the obvious choice for the Godmother.

When Christopher was about 3 months old I got a knock on my door in the middle of the night. I opened it and saw Christopher and a diaper bag on my doorstep with a note in his cot.

I couldnt do it. I'm sorry.
A.S

I brought Christopher in and placed the cot on the couch. He started crying, so I rooted through the diaper bag for breast milk. Eventually I found it and began to warm it while calling Amelia repeatedly.

I sat with Christopher in my lap with a bottle of breast milk for the next 5 hours until Charlotte came looking for me for work.

'I'm coming in!' She shouted when I didn't respond to her multiple knocks. 'What's going on?' Her eyes scanned over the mess in my kitchen. 'Amelia left.' I say bluntly. 'What?' Charlotte moves the diaper bag and sits next to me. 'She couldn't do it. She left Christopher here with a bag and a note.'

'I didn't want kids. Ever. I was happy with the idea of being the fun aunt that gets the best presents and you gossip with. I never wanted to have to ground the kids or go to parent teacher meetings.' I say, rocking Christopher so he doesn't cry again. 'You can give him in to the hospital and we can organise a social worker.' Charlotte suggests. 'No.' I shake my head. 'I refuse to be a mother, but that doesn't mean he's getting a shitty foster care childhood. I will be the fun aunt who he just happens to be having a sleepover with. Okay?' I plan. 'Alright. But we're all here if you need us.'

The next morning I bought Christopher all the baby things I assumed he would need. I put him into the daycare, and then I went to work. 'Hey, is everything alright?' Violet asks me. 'Yeah, why?' I say, taking a sip of my coffee. 'Amelia left you a baby in the middle of the night.' She says. 'Violet, ew. Don't say it like that. Is that your therapist voice? You need to change it.' I redirect the conversation. 'To what? Is everything okay?' She repeats in a high pitched voice. 'That's the one!' I clap.

3 years later

I was called to Seattle for a surgery by Derek. Some conjoined twins, I wasn't paying attention. He told me Amelia would be there as well.

I saw her in the break room first. She smiled but didn't say anything. 'I brought Christopher.' I say. 'He goes by Chris now. He likes the colour pink, and dinosaurs. And if you play Madonna, he jumps up and down and pretends to be a parrot. He likes stealing my lipstick and pretending to be me. He's starting school in a few months.' Amelia sits down, taking in the new information. 'Why are you telling me this?' She asks. 'Because I think you got overwhelmed, and he deserves to meet you. At least give him that. I believe that tou are a good person, Amelia. But if you wait too long to meet him, he won't. He will think you're cruel for leaving, and for not caring. So meet him now, and he will love you forever.'

'I saw Ryan in him. His eyes. I was so scared. That night- The night I left him. I only did it because I wasn't sure he would grow up to be like me now, or me as a teenager. If he did I wouldn't have been able to survive. I'm so sorry. I know you never wanted to be a mother. I just didn't know who to go to. Derek didn't even know I was pregnant!' Amelia sobs. 'You're his mother, he deserves to know you. Come over for dinner tonight.' I tell her.

That night at seven I have pink and purple pasta ready for three people. The doorbell rings and there's Amelia, holding a chocolate cake.

'Chris, come here!' Chris comes running at the sound of my voice. 'Hi!' He waves energetically. 'Hello!' Amelia laughs. 'Is that chocolate cake?' He asks. 'It is, but let's have dinner first, okay?' Amelia answers. He leads her into the kitchen and I watch as she talks to him easily.
