Chickens (Arizona)

'Can we have chickens? I have this weird thing for chickens.' Arizona and I are in a research lab with Thai food and a growing spleen in the fridge. 'You can have chickens. But no more chicken satay.' I pull away her food and she frowns at me. I laugh and lean in to kiss her. 'You're awesome.' We've been avoiding the L-word. I want to say it, but I can't be the first. She robs her food back from my hands while i'm kissing her. 'Hey!' I scowl at her jokingly. 'Oh. Hi.' Meredith barges in to the lab. 'What are you doing here?' We've been keeping our relationship secret. Just until I get a Paediatric Fellowship, so that people don't think it's special treatment. 'Waiting on a spleen to grow. We got hungry, and Dr. L/n is helping with some paperwork.' Arizona lies. 'Oh. Okay. Do you need a ride? Me and Derek are going home.' Meredith asks me. 'I'll get a cab.' I say. 'Okay. Bye.' I wave at her and wait until the door shuts to completely relax. 'Do you think she saw us?' Arizona asks. 'No, no.' She sighs. 'Maybe, pull the blind?' I stand up and cover the window on the door. Then I lock the door. 'No more surprises.' I assure her. 'Thank you.' She kisses me. 'Do you want to stay at my house tonight?' She asks. I consider it. 'Sure.' I answer. She smiles.

The next morning I planned on leaving early, but decided against it when I saw that Arizona got up to make breakfast. I rest my head on her shoulder and kiss her cheek. 'Hey.' She giggles. 'What's this?' I ask. 'Eggs Benedict. I'm practising for when you get me a chicken.' She tells me. I look up at the clock. 'Crap, we're going to be late!'' She grabs a container and puts the eggs into it. 'Okay, let's go.'

'L/n, you're with Robbins today. Room 1248.' Bailey orders. I nod and go to the elevator. 'Hey.' Arizona stands next to me in the elevator. 'Hi.' I say. She pulls the emergency stop. 'What?' I turn to her. She kisses me. 'That's all.' I look down, shaking my head. 'Hey, what's wrong?' She puts her hands on my shoulders. 'What if someone is on the other side of that door, and wonders why the emergency stop shows up. What if they check the security cameras? What if-' Arizona stops me. 'Hey, hey. The emergency stop barely ever shows up. There is a very, very small chance anybody checks the cameras. We are being so careful, okay?' She kisses my head. 'Okay.' I let the elevator go.

'So, how's the girlfriend?' Meredith comes over to me. 'What girlfriend? I- I don't even- I don't know what you're talking about.' I scratch my neck nervously. 'Okay, if you say so.' Meredith says. 'Guess who got you a solo surgery?' Arizona sneaks up behind me. 'Oh my god really? You're incredible!' I forget everything and hug her. 'Oh!' Arizona looks surprised. 'Okay, OR 2, 4 O'Clock, bowel resection on Sarah James.' Arizona tells me. 'Okay, thank you!' Arizona waves but doesn't look back. 'What?' I look at Meredith. 'I don't even know what you're talking about.' She mocks me. 'I am not dating Dr. Robbins! She's just my mentor, nothing else. I'm just sucking up to get a fellowship, okay?' I scoff and turn around. 'Oh god.' Arizona was behind me. 'I wanted to tell you, Sarah James is in room 1482.' She has tears in her eyes. 'Arizona!' I scowl at Meredith and chase after my girlfriend.

'Will you page Dr. Robbins again?' I beg the nurse. 'It's been 10 minutes.' I sigh and turn around. 'I need a chicken!' I realise. 'Chief Webber, I'm taking the day off.' My shift hasn't started yet and so he lets me go.

I find a plain white scrub cap and sketch some chickens on it. I go to a farm and get her a baby chick. I get her a card and write on it "I'm sorry, Arizona.". I wish I could have written more but I didn't have much time. I call her and I drive around for hours before realising where she is. She's in the research lab.

'Arizona?' I call. 'Go away.' She says. I open the door. 'I got you something.' I say. 'What, a card that says you're sorry?' I drop the card. 'No. Close your eyes.' She scoffs. 'Close your eyes!' She closes her eyes nervously and I go around behind her. I put the scrub cap on her and tie it around her head. 'Open them.' I place the mirror in front of her. 'Is that it?' She asks. 'I got you a chick. A baby chick, because you love babies and chicks.' She laughs, but she's still crying. 'Hey, hey. I am so, so sorry. I was lying to Mer.' I kneel down and put her hands in mine. 'Between last night and when I hugged you, I thought she'd find out. If one person finds out, everybody finds out. This is the most gossipy hospital in the world. I- I love you.' She looks up. 'What?' She asks. 'I love you! I could spend the rest of my life with you talking about chickens and never get bored. When I talk to you in front of people, it takes all my energy to look into your gorgeous eyes and not at your incredible lips that if I did look at I would just kiss you. I love you!' I kiss her and I cup her face and I wipe her tears. 'I love you too.' Arizona whispers. She wraps her arms around me and I pull her in. 'Hey, I- what if we moved in together? I could say you needed a roommate and Lexie could take my room- or we could tell them?' I say. 'But the fellowship! You can't give that up, I can't let you.' She refuses. 'I don't care, Arizona. If I'm with you I don't care. You are all I need.' I say. I kiss her again, and again and again.
