'If you could run away, where would you go?' Amelia asked. It's a question she asked once a week, but I was buzzed, so I answered truthfully this time.
'North Carolina. It has a pretty name.' Amelia laughed a little and I hushed her. It was 3AM in her old treehouse with brandy I stole from my mom. 'Shush! If any of your sisters see us, we're dead!' I warn her. 'We're lucky Dereks not here, he'd kill me.' She sighed. Derek had gone back to school the day before and she missed him.
'We should do it. Run away.' I sat up at the suggestion. 'Come on! You hate your mom, my mom hates me. It's perfect timing!' Summer was nearly over at that point, the air cooling and leaves falling from trees. I considered it. She was right in saying I hated my mom. She was a socialite who wanted nothing more than for me to be popular in school, but I had met Amelia in our freshman year and all hope went out the window. I couldn't speak for Amelias mother, but I assumed she was right in saying it. I had heard them argue a couple times before, and it wasn't fun.
'When?' I asked, now on board. 'Tonight. I'll go get my clothes and some money. We can share. I bet we make it to West Virginia before they notice we're gone.' I told her to go quickly and pack a bag while I cleaned up the treehouse, making sure to hide the booze carefully under a few blankets.
When she came back she had a small suitcase and a duffel bag. 'I have the car keys. How much have you had to drink?' She asks. 'Around four glasses, you?' She sighed and handed over the keys. 'Five. But we stop for gas and get a coffee to sober up, okay?' I nodded. I hated driving drunk; everything felt ten times larger and more stressful.
We got in her car and began to drive, stopping half an hour in at a 7/11 to get coffee and gas. I paid, using my moms emergency credit card. She had been sending the bills to my dad in Jamaica since the divorce, so I assumed it was a safe bet nobody would check how much I had spent.
We got back in the car and kept driving, Amelia playing DJ and switching the radio channel every three minutes. 'I have to say, of all the people I could run away with, I'm glad it's you.' I tell her. 'That's so sweet!' She says, sounding sarcastic but being dead honest. 'You're welcome.' I wink.
At 9AM, we stop at a diner in Virginia. 'Where do you want to go?' I ask Amelia, taking a sip of my iced tea. 'Illinois?' I laugh. 'You wouldn't last a day in Chicago. It's way too cold for you.' She rolls her eyes. 'Okay, how about... Georgia?' I think about it. From where we are it's about an 8 hour drive. 'Alright. If we leave here at 10, we could get there around 7, with an hours break.' I tell her. 'Sounds good. Leave some money on the table and we can go get snacks from the Target down the road.'
We're shopping in the clothing aisle when Amelia gets a phone call from an unknown number. She shoves the phone at me and tells me to answer. 'Hello?' I say, glaring at Amelia. 'Hey, Y/n. It's Derek. I'm on Marks phone. Where the hell are you?' I groan in annoyance at the sound of Dereks voice. 'We're in Target.' I tell him. 'Mom says Amelia hasn't been home all day.' I hesitate a minute. 'Yeah... we left early to get breakfast. She forgot to leave a note.' Derek sighs down the phone. 'Where's Amelia?' He asks me. 'She's in the bathroom. I'll tell her you called. Bye!' I hang up before he can say another word.
'What?' I ask when Amelia rolls her eyes. 'I didn't lie!' She still looks a little angry but gives up. 'Alright. Let's go.'
When we reach North Carolina, Amelia gets another phone call. 'Hi. Derek? She answers. I stand next to her and listen to her side of the conversation. 'Okay, we might be in North Carolina. It's not my fault! It kind of is, but... No! Derek, we are not going home!' Amelia huffs and hangs up.
'Do you want to stay here tonight? There's a motel a ten minute drive down the street.' I ask. 'Sure.' She nods and I drive us to the motel.
We pay for the night and head to our room. There are two single beds and a TV across from them. I check to see if Law and Orders on. It's not, so I settle on an old movie and lie on the bed.
'I'm going down to get some ice.' Amelia says. I nod and she leaves, shutting the door behind her.
A few minutes later, Amelia still isn't back. I sit up and call her phone. Derek answers. 'Derek? What's going on, where's Amelia?' I ask. 'We're going home, Y/n. She won't be talking to you anymore.' I hear Amelia shout from the back of the car. 'I'm sorry! I didn't want-' Derek hangs up the phone and I sigh. She'll come back. She knows where we're going.
The next morning I check out and call Amelia from the car. It goes to voicemail. 'Amelia? I'm going to Atlanta. I'll call when I get there, alright?' I hang up and start driving.
Amelia never followed.
I stayed in Atlanta for two weeks before the money stopped coming into my credit card. Then I got a job in Savannah, working as a waiter.
A year later I had earned enough money to move to New York, and I started working in an art gallery.
On a November evening, when I was just about to leave, Amelia knocked on the door.
'Y/n.' She said awkwardly. 'Amelia. Where were you?' I walk back into the gallery.
'John Hopkins. Derek made me leave, and he wouldn't let me bring you. I'm so sorry, Y/n. I never wanted to leave you there.' Amelia says guiltily. I look up at her. 'You're studying medicine?' She nods. 'It's fun. You'd like it.' I smile. 'I have to go, but I hope we can see eachother again?' I offer. She grins. 'Yeah, here is my phone number.' She hands me a piece of paper. 'Call me.' And she leaves.
