SHOT 23: His Phone Call

"Cynth," he called my name again like how he usually does. Then he held my hand more firmly.

"A-ano yon?" I replied. Pilitin ko mang hindi mautal pero ang hirap. Diba nga? My body is failing me at this moment. All because of this guy in front of me. It seems that he has already invaded my nervous system and controlled it somehow. Siya rin siguro ang nagsisilbing drummer nito ngayon.

Pinilit kong alisin ang kaba ko. "Alto ...."

"Cynth," he started, "Pano kung ... sabihin ko sayo na yung babaeng gusto ko ...," I throbbed at his words. He's finally telling it.

Breathe! I need to breathe! But ... I can't seem to do it.

He continued ...

"Pano kung sabihin ko sayo na yung babaeng gusto ko ... She's just in front of ..."

♫ Krrrriiiing!!!! ♫

May tumunog ng malakas kaya nataranta kami pareho. Phone call. Kanino? I grabbed my bag to check it.

"Bwisit." Alto's voice.

I turned to him and I saw him holding out his phone.

"Si Sofia ...," he mumbled then he let out a big, frustrated sigh.

Sumandal siya on his seat. He lifted his phone up and answered it.  "Oh? Bakit ka biglang tumawag? .... Sige na, sige .... Oo .... Nasa biyahe na ko .... Bye."

Binaba niya agad. Then again, he made a sigh.

"Kainis naman to," reklamo niya while putting his phone back.

Saved by the bell. Phew.

"Sofia?" tanong ko. I wanna know who my savior is.

"Uhm. Kapatid ko. Atat lang, pinapauwi na ako agad," he explained with a disappointed look, hanging his head down.

"Ahh ... so, tara na?" alok ko. I don't want the topic to resume. Hindi na kaya ng katawan ko.

He wordlessly started the engine at pinaandar na ulit yung kotse niya.

Finally, naalala na ng katawan ko kung paano huminga. But my heart, it's still pounding rapidly.

"Pano kung sabihin ko sayo na yung babaeng gusto ko ... She's just in front of ..."   ...in front of him?

Ibig sabihin ... ako yun. Ako talaga? But why? Siguro nga ako yun.

Hindi ... Ako NGA yun.

I looked at the window and I saw his reflection again. His eyes fixed on the road and he's driving silently.

Hindi ko alam kung anong iniisip niya sa ngayon. Pero malaki ang posibilidad na naiinis to. Naputol kasi yung sasabihin niya sakin. Siguro big deal talaga yun para sa kanya.

Magalit kaya to sakin kung pipilitin kong iwasan na ipagpatuloy niya yung sasabihin sana niya kanina?

        "Malamang hindi. Malakas ka dun eh!"   (yung isa niyang officemate)

I don't know. Pero ... friendship lang talaga ang meron saming dalawa, diba? Pano magkakaroon ng something?

        "Baka ibang relasyon ang gusto ni Alto sayo, Cynthia."   (si senior)

But he never asked for it again. Sa tingin ko he knows all along that I am not open for a commitment right now, gaya nung sinabi ko dun sa dati niyang officemate sa main building. I think he's just ... nice. And definitely he's not planning to ask me again!
