We arrived at school to find the field already bursting with people. The smell of a barbecue wafted up my nose and the bright coloured painted patterns splattered onto students bodies caught me attention, causing me to notice the friendly competitiveness of opposing teams with their various colours.
"This is so cool." I said, Ally grinned at me, apparently pleased with my observation.
Nash started laughing at something with Cameron from behind me, distracting me from my momentary bliss of forgetting he or anyone other than Ally or me existed.
I saw Ally roll her eyes, she must've noticed too. She then studied the field and smiled when she had apparently noticed something she liked.
"Look, Mr. Deans over there. Let's go say hi!" Ally said, taking me hand and skipping towards him.
"Ah, Ally and Amelia. Nice to see you, especially since you both look like you've just left a sports clothing photo shoot." He told us with a wink as he swung a bat in his hands.
"Why thank you." Ally replied, joking with him by adding a little curtesy at the end.
"Hey, Mr. Dean-" I started, but he held his hand up to stop me.
"Call me Caleb, Mr. Dean is way too formal, I was your age not that long ago." He insisted, offering me the second wink he'd given since we started talking to him.
Ally looked at me and wiggled her eyebrows, I could tell she was thinking the same thing as me - Mr. Gorgeous was only a few years older than us, if that, and insisting that we call him by his real name!
"Okay then, Caleb," I said with a grin, "can you practice a match with us? I wanna see how well I can bat."
"Sure, let me just get a few people to help out and then-" he replied.
"Don't worry, we can just play as us three, Aimee can bat, you can bowl and I'll field." She suggested, already jogging further from where we stood to get a better position on the field.
"Alright then."
I stood in the batters box, holding the bat up in a ready position. Caleb threw the ball my way and I swung the bat around with enough force that it shot past Ally, causing her to swear and race of after it.
I stayed still for a minute, dazed at how well I'd just hit the ball and forgetting what I needed to do next.
I quickly snapped out of it and started running around the posts, knocking each one down as I passed them. Caleb intervened by 'accidentally' sticking his foot out and tripping me up and then continuing to catch the ball and tap it to the post exclaiming "out!" As the post and the ball touched.
I laughed and accepted his extended hand to help me get up. I wiped off the mud from my butt as Ally strode over to us taking heavy breaths in and out.
"Well done Ally, that was great!" Caleb told her, high-fiving her, "and Amelia, you're an amazing batter." He praised, high-fiving me as well. "It's a shame you went up against such fine players like us or you might've actually got a rounder."
I scoffed but then laughed, knowing that he was only teasing.
"The first match of the day is about to begin!" The over enthusiastic voice from the speakers bellowed.
A formation of teens headed towards our pitch with Cameron leading the way.
"Sir," he hissed at Caleb, "can you get off our pitch so that we can play our match?"
"Cameron, how many times do I have to tell you that you can call me Caleb?" Mr. Dean replied, giving Cam a warm smile and ignoring the rudeness that Cameron had used in his tone.
