Rounders day ended with the boys' team winning and taking the crown, not that the girls cared as half of them had left and the other half were sunbathing and not paying attention.
"The teachers want us to stay in school for another half an hour so that we're not finishing early." Ashley came over to tell us, sulking.
"What should we - oops." Ally said as she dropped some of her ice lolly from the stick by accident, "what should we do?"
"Can't we go indoors? It's gonna be empty because everyone's out here instead of in there. We could be explorers!" I suggested.
"Yeah, okay!"
So we headed inside the empty building, climbing up stairs and through millions of doors.
"What's this?" Someone would say every once in a while, their voices echoing from the walls.
We'd all go investigate a hidden doorway or tiny cupboards, but they only ever led to boring offices or hallways that led to dead ends.
This whole exploring thing was not nearly as interesting as I'd hoped.
"Hey, guys, what's this?" I turned unenthusiastically, already preparing for another stupid door when I saw Ally standing on a dusty desk that we found in one of the empty rooms.
Half her body was hidden in the top of the ceiling where she'd shifted a tile across and hauled her upper body up.
I saw her take her phone and click the flashlight button on.
"What's up there?" I asked, edging closer, I noticed Ashely do the same.
"A really old looking ladder and another trap door thing." She told us, lifting herself into the gap entirely and then sticking her hands down so that she could help us up.
Once we were all in, I stood up and looked around. The area was big enough to be another room, it was in a box shape and the far corner was the only light in the room as a small block of sunshine squeezed through the shape in the ceiling the reveal an ancient looking ladder.
"Wow, this is so cool." I heard Ashley whisper behind me.
"I wanna go up first." I said, carefully making my way towards it.
"Better you than me, who knows what weird spiders they'll be up there? What if there're rats?" Ally questioned as she followed closely behind.
I climbed up the steps and then covered my eyes with my arm as a brilliant light stung my eyes.
After blinking about a million times, I was finally able the look around the room, I instantly loved it.
The wall furthest from me was not even a wall, it was just glass which couldn't be seen from the ground as it was covered by a tree, however, you could still see over the majority of the field from up here. Kind of like blacked out windows, you can see out but they can't see in.
Along the side walls were old bookshelves spilling with antique books and an old record player with records sitting beside it that had names of artists written on them that I didn't recognise.
At the back of the room was more steps, however these ones were stone and made more of a staircase than the ladder had and so once everyone was up and had looked around we started on the steps.
They ended at another wooden door, this one looked battered from brutal weather and endless opening and shutting. I pushed it slightly and it instantly gave way, I stepped out to find myself on top of the school building.
"This is the best explorer discovery ever!" Ally exclaimed, standing beside me and taking in the view.
"We should keep it just between us though, like a secret hideout that we can go to if we need some privacy or just want to escape." I said, never taking my eyes from the breath taking view.
"Um, guys, I don't mean to kill the mood, but isn't that our bus home?" Ashley asked, facing the front of the school and pointing to a yellow bus that was rounding the corner to the school bus stop.
I followed Ashley and Ally as we ran back through the battered wooden door, past the bookshelves, down the trapdoor and the ladder, across the box room and hop down the gap in the ceiling onto the table, we then continued racing down the hallways until we reached the bus stop, sucking in large breaths and we reached it.
"It's okay, it hasn't left yet." Ally said, slowing down slightly, we walked towards its opened doors when it started pulling away.
"No no no no no!" I wailed, sprinting towards it, but to no such luck, the bus was gone.
"Great, now what?" Ally asked, slumping against the lamppost.
"We wait for the next one." Ashely said, taking a position on the sidewalk.
"Can you two feel rain?" I asked, holding my hands up skyward and trying to feel if little splatters were reaching my skin.
"Nope, I can't." Ally replied, but after a few minutes of deliberating, she corrected herself, "wait, now I can."
Ashley looked up at the sky, "it's getting really dark up there, really fast." She told us, referring to the blackening clouds.
Suddenly, as if someone had clicked a switch, a downpour of water struck us. It was literally as if a bucket had been tipped on us, except the bucket was actually just a bottomless pit and it contained more water than all the oceans combined.
"Oh my god!" I screamed, closing my eyes because there was no point in blinking - I couldn't see anyway.
"What the hell is this?" Ally squealed in response, "I'm already drenched!"
"Is there any where we can shelter?" I asked, struggling to squint through the rain to try spot some dry land.
"Over there!" Ashely said, rushing over towards a blanket of trees which had formed a type of cave with their leaves.
We all rushed over there, already dripping wet.
"How long will the second bus take to get here?" I asked, wringing out my hair and accidentally spraying Ashley with a new splash of water.
"About 10 minutes." Ally informed me, covering her hair with the spare jumper she's bought for today.
"Ally is your hair even wet?" I asked, noticing that she had put the jumper straight ever her head when the rain first started.
She pulled the jumper away to reveal beautiful, brown and dry hair.
"Why didn't I think of that?" I moaned, Ashely said something similar in unison with me.
Every time we heard a bus, one of us would have to sacrifice ourselves to the rain to check if it were our bus. In the end, we were all in fits of laughter as we teased each other on how stupid we looked and how stupid this situation was.
Finally, it was Ally's turn to check if it was our bus that had rounded the corner and she screamed at us that it was, so we all took off towards it, battling the rain as we jumped on and sat down with a sigh of relief.
For a moment we were silent and straight faced as we looked at each other, Ally's clothes were clinging to her and her hair was sticking up where she'd pulled the jumper from it, Ashley's hair stuck to the side of the face, water trailer from her cheeks and her paper bag hung in tatters and I knew my hair would be a knotty mess and my eyes would be black with mascara.
"How do I look?" I asked sarcastically and we all burst out laughing at each other.
