I pulled up to small house and put the car into park. I opened my door after I removed the keys and grabbed my purse. I slammed the car door shut and went to the trunk, pulling out my bags and than carried them up to the front door.

Lauren had left it open to allow air to flow into the house and help to keep it cooler. I brought my bags in and brought them up the stairs to the first bedroom.

In the house there were only two bedrooms, one for each of us, and one and a half baths. The full bathroom was in the hall between our rooms and the half was downstairs off the kitchen.

We had a living room, family room, dining room and kitchen downstairs, with a small mudroom by the side entrance.

"Lauren I'm here!" I yelled. I walked into the hallway as she poled her head out from her room. Her blonde hair had globs of light blue paint in it as she smiled at me. Even though her hair was up she always managed to get something in it when she did something like this.

The roller was dripping and she still held it in her hand. She walked back into the room, probably to set it down before she slaked out and leaned on the doorframe.

She was wearing an old, beige baggy t-shirt and an old pair of black sweatpants.

"Back already I see." she wiped her forehead with the back of her hand. "How did it go?"

I shrugged as I walked down to her room and looked in. "Ok I guess. . . I see you're almost done."

"Hey don't change the subject on me." Same as always. She won't let me get away with a goddamn thing.

"Well it was a lot of pent up emotions and it felt like multiple stabs in the chest and I felt like I was losing myself in old memories." I smiled a sad and broken smile at her. "Thanks for asking."

She looked at me sadly and the smile fell off her face. "I would've come with you ya know."

I nodded. "I know all too well."

I put my hand on the doorframe and pulled back and realized the paint was wet as white paint covered my palm.

"Well I should throw my stuff in my closet and all that and start putting all plastic tarp down so I can start painting."

She nodded. "Yeah that sounds like a good idea. Take your mind off some things too."

I nodded. "oh and by the way, the frames still wet." I laughed as her eyes went wide and she pulled aback from the wall. her shirt had scrunched up on her back and it stuck to the paint. When she finally got it free she was cursing and swearing like a sailor about how she'd never get the paint off, and I only shook my head and headed back towards my room.

I wiped the paint from my hand on my leg and threw my bags into my closet. It was a small walk in so it was easy to fit everything inside.

My bed wasn't here yet. Sadly. We were living on blow up mattresses until we could get the messy jobs done.

I deflated the mattress and threw it into the closet before I closed the door. I left the paint trays, cans and brushes in he corner of the room.

I walked down the hall and knocked on the open bathroom door as Lauren scrubbed away feverishly at her back with a sponge, water dripping down her back as she couldn't reach the center and she continued to swear like her death was near.

"Hey, I'm gonna take some of your painting stuff." She nodded as she continued to scrub her skin raw.

I went into her room and grabbed the painters tape and the box of plastic tarps. I went back in and taped around the two windows that I had in my room, the doorway and than unfolded and set down be tarp and than taped it to the baseboard before I taped the baseboard as well.
