I yawned and stretched as the morning sun rose onto the village. The light was faint, with a cold breeze, caressing the curtains and flowing through my room by the open window. I huddled with the covers in search of warmth when I realized I could just get up and close my window, as simple as that. Once up, I searched through my wooden closet for the regular things I'd need to get ready with. A small checkered shirt, to my preference, a little over the stomach and some black jogging pants, I mean, I was fourteen so I think I could make my own decisions if given the chance.

As I turned around, I saw Cuddles scratching onto my door in hopes of opening it. I let out a small "Aww'' before walking over, opening the door and giving him a hug. I was so happy he was growing healthily since when I had found him, he was infested with fleas and was starving at the edge of a tree. Nobody would've saved that raccoon but I did. Lying down onto my lap, I gave him some belly rubs, Cuddles was so affectionate.

I put him down before getting out of my room and walking downstairs. My parents were waiting for me, like usual.

"Today's a day off, what're you doing all dressed up?"

My mom said, rocking onto the ligneous chair while knitting some socks for my pet. "Isn't it the time of the reaping soon? Have to look fashionable at any moment y'know." "Well this isn't a day to be happy about. What if your friends get picked for the Hunger Games?"

My dad groaned, reading the regular news on his long, folded sheets of fragile paper.

"They don't take tesserae so that's not very probable."

I smiled and sat down at the table, eating some oats that were already prepared for me. It was not in the biggest quantity but it still counted as breakfast.

"Didn't you get extra tickets for taking two years of tesserae?"

Mother asked, she doesn't really get how it works.

"Yeah, but that's only two likened to all of the ten thousand or so people who probably are counting on it right now."

"Yeah. You're a lucky boy to be born in a richer neighborhood. This way we could afford you nourishment, a pet and even your scholarship. That's pretty costly, we don't want you to end like your father here, a low income lumberjack."

"It's still funny how you making socks is enough to keep us sustained."

My dad gave mom 'the stare' which usually occurred when he would disagree with her. That was only sometimes, they do share different beliefs on certain subjects but I'm happy that they get along.

"I have to get to work soon kiddo."

My dad extended his arms, dropping the newspaper onto his face. He threw it off with one swipe of a limb then raised himself from the oaken chair, diagonally from me.

"When do I have axe throwing practice again?"

"Once you're completely healed from the incident."

Oh, he's talking about that again. We used to sneak out of home, late at night and go to the chopping grounds, where the lumberjacks of District 7 cut flagged trees and planted saplings. He'd give me an axe and we'd practise throwing it at targets, such as the red dots on conifers, oaks, weeping willows or american sycamores, common trees in our environment. I'd bring my friend Pastel with me sometimes, he's about my age and is interested in these types of things. Dad would teach me survival tips if I were placed in terrible situations, excluding the possibility of the Hunger Games in his examples.

Anyways, I mastered the task but that wasn't the problem, the Peacekeepers were. One night, we were training in the fields and they saw us. They of course started firing at us as we weren't supposed to be there late at night, I had gotten hit in the foot with a bullet and it got infected a few days later. I remember the intense pain, not only from the bullet but from the infection, like it was being stabbed repeatedly for a week without stopping. When we went to see the doctor, I had to get a toe amputated and my foot was swollen, filled with bacteria, that's why it was a darker color. I could've easily lost my entire tootsie if I hadn't demanded to see a doctor at the first signs of contamination, I'm thankful I did so.
