"Why me?"
The demand cut through the silence of the attic, where Hawk Moth and Mayura had previously stood. Now, Nathalie watched Gabriel with sorrow-filled eyes as the window closed.
"Why me?" he asked again, slumping to his knees. "Nathalie, I don't think I can take this anymore." His sudden sob made her flinch.
She silently knelt, winding her arms around him.
"I never asked to lose Emilie. I never asked to have any near-victory plucked from my hands by those stupid superheroes! I don't want to do this anymore . . ."
"Whatever decision you make, I'll support you," she said quietly.
She leaned her head against his and the two remained there, Gabriel's quiet sobs the only sound in the attic.
