𝐈 𝐁𝐈𝐓 my lip nervously, glancing at Akira as she walked confidently in front of me. Sure, I felt guilty that I had let slip a few things about her, but what she didn't know wouldn't kill her right?

Our first class of the day was Math. Akira made a dramatic sigh as she fell into her seat, dropping her bag to the ground, whilst I rummaged through mine for my things. I pressed my lips into a thin line, "Do you really need to make your distaste for this subject so obvious?"

"Well, yeah. It really puzzles me as to why on earth you like this subject," she rolled her eyes. "I love you Lil, but I seriously do not understand you sometimes."

I was about to respond to her when the teacher walked in. As he began to blab on about calculus, my mind drifted to memories of our mother. She was the one who made me want to push myself. She had once said, "Lila, you must make a better future for yourself. Don't condemn yourself to the life of your brothers and father."

I had asked her what she meant, but she had frowned, "Their job could land us in dangerous places."

She was right.

She had paid the price. For us.

"The debt must be paid, in blood this time. You had your chance."

"But my daughters- please- have mercy."

"You can blame this on your family."

Unconsciously, my mouth had turned into a grimace, and I quickly forced myself to fix it, however the teacher noticed. "Miss Romano, do you understand what I'm saying? Are you even paying attention?"

I gave him a hasty nod, shooting Akira a glare as she laughed, giving me a light kick underneath the desk. How on earth was this teacher so observative?

Thankfully, the bell rang, so I quickly packed my things and hurried after Akira who was already halfway out the door.

"Akira," I huffed, "Why on earth do you have to walk so fast?"

"I really don't twinny," she countered, "you just have really short legs."

I gave her an insulted look, "I got you a fantastic birthday present, and this is what I get in return?"

She looked guilty for a split second, and my eyebrows scrunched together. She took another couple of steps, then stopped, turning to face me. I folded my arms across my chest defensively, "Spill it."

"Okay, so I might have forgotten it was our birthday today and didn't get you a gift?" she squeaked apologetically. "Look, I'll give you your gift today, I promise."

I plastered a smile on my face, "It's all good."

Grabbing my things, I turned on my heel and hurried away from her before I said anything that I would regret.

**Akira's POV**

I gave a wave to Myles as I walked out of the school doors, heading over t where he was standing near the shadows, away from prying ears.

When I reached him, I gave his shoulder a bump, "So, what did you want to ask me so desperately?"

He rubbed the back of his neck, "Do you have the answers for the chem homework?"

I raised an eyebrow.

"Alright fine, that's not what I wanted to ask you," he conceded, "But I still need the answers for the homework."

He took a step towards me. I swallowed nervously, heart beating tenfold. Sure, I liked him, and yes, he saved my arse a couple of times, but that didn't mean anything. He was hiding something important.
