Only three months,
and you never learned my favorite color.

You never noticed
which songs I played on the nights
I needed comfort most.

I told you my favorite flowers were tulips.
You gave me roses anyway.

You never asked
what kept me awake at night,
what coffee I order,
what movies make me cry,
or why I go quiet
when something hurts me.

Sometimes I think
you loved having a girlfriend
more than you ever loved me.

I became another box
on your weekly checklist—

call girlfriend,
take girlfriend out,
kiss girlfriend goodbye,

then forget about me
until the next weekend came around.

And still—

three months felt like a lifetime
I could not leave.
