Open During a Storm

Staring at the ground,
I keep wondering
how I convinced myself
you would stay.

I spent so long
keeping my heart untouched,
afraid love would ruin me
the moment I let it in.

And then there was you.

Little by little,
I stopped guarding the parts of myself
I swore no one would ever reach.

Only for you to leave
once there was nothing left in me
you had not already taken.

Now everything feels broken.

Like a house left open during a storm—
windows shattered,
paintings torn from the walls.

And I keep telling myself
to lock every door,
to never let the wind inside again,
to turn my heart into something cold,
something no one could ever hold.

But the worst part is...

a part of me still remembers
why I opened it for you.
