You think I never said I love you.
Because I didn't say the three words
you were waiting to hear,
you thought my feelings weren't real.
But I say I love you all the time.
I say it when I give you
the last piece of lemon cake
we both want.
I say it when I stand in the rain
holding the umbrella over you
so you don't get sick in the cold.
I say it when I listen to you talk about the things you love,
your face lighting up
like the world is suddenly brighter.
I say it when I'm exhausted
but still drive you home
so you can rest instead.
I say it when I stop to buy flowers
just because I know you'll smile when you see them.
And maybe I never said it the way you wanted to hear it.
And I'm sorry
for never finding the courage
to say those words out loud.
But I didn't want you to leave
without knowing that love was already there—
in everything I did for you.
