Kaz POV

He was drowning, and there was no one to save him. He had dug his own grave, now it was so deep no one could hear his cries. He took his last breath, than he was sinking.

"Kaz." The voice startled him awake, his breathing heavy.

"Jesper want's to see you." Kaz forced himself to listen to Rose's voice. He rose from the bed and threw a shirt over his head. He glanced at the clock while putting on his coat and buttoning it up.

"What dose he want?" Kaz asked.

"Most likely another loan, nothing seemed wrong in the crow club. There was  a fight between two of the dealers but it was nothing we couldn't handle. Oh and the black tips intercepted one of our jurda shipments this morning. I gave the one I caught a good beating but I don't think Geels is gonna give up." Rose said. I only now took in her appearance. Her hair had for the most part fallen out of the ponytail she kept it in and there was blood on her clothing.

"Unless you need me I'm going to find a bath." Rose said.

"Meet me back here in half an hour, we need to deal with Geels once and for all." I told her, grabbing my cane and a new hat. She nodded and left the room. Jesper was waiting on the stairs when I exited my room.

"No you can not have another loan, go make yourself useful." I told Jesper, not sparing the sharpshooter a glance as I started down the stairs.

Rose POV

Tonight was the night we got Geels for intercepting our shipments. I stalked behind Kaz and the others, Inej at my side.

"What exactly is your role in this?" Inej asked.

"My job is to be Kaz's moral support while standing here looking pretty." I told her a sarcastic smile on my lips

"Really?" Inej asked curiosity behind her gaze

"No idiot." I responded, glaring in her direction. "Now be a good girl and disappear, will you?" I told her, my irritation growing. Inej shot me a glare and disappeared. I didn't even know why I was always like this around her. It wasn't her fault she was taken to slavery. Kaz had been watching our exchange and motioned me forwards. I caught up to him and fell into step beside him.

"You shouldn't be so harsh on her Rose." Kaz said, his voice as raspy as ever.

"And why's that Kaz." I asked him.

"You know what this life is like. If she dies tonight is that really what you want your last words to her to be?" Kaz asked, studying me with genuine curiosity.

I spared one glance as Inej disappeared over a wall. "Not really I guess. I don't even know why I get so mad when I see her." I confessed to him. Kaz gave me a knowing glance before replying.

"You know why you get upset when you see her Rose, don't bother acting like you don't. Shouldn't you be getting into position?" Kaz asked me raising a brow. I nodded.

"No mourners." I started, beginning to walk away from the group.

"No funerals." They replied.

The trip with Geels didn't go exactly as planed but the Dreg's won and the Black Tips weren't going to keep stealing our pigeon's. Kaz caught my eye in the crowd and motioned for me to follow him. The rest of the Dregs were cheering and celebrating, crowding Kaz and asking him numerous questions about how he knew Big Boll was a traitor. Kaz ignored them all and continued down the street. Once we were away from the Dregs I allowed myself to fall into step beside him and slide my fingers into his gloved hand. He hesitated for a moment before squeezing my hand lightly.

"Fifth Harbor?" I asked him. He nodded and kept his eyes on the road ahead of him. we walked in silence for a few minutes, hands intertwined, each of us lost in our own thoughts until I asked suddenly

"Do you ever get tired of this life Kaz?" I looked into the bitter coffee eyes I knew so well as I waited for his answer.

"Even if I did what other life is there?" He asked me. I was about to respond when we heard a noise from behind us. We had walked into an alley which was a faster route to fifth harbor. Kaz let go of my hand and we both got into fighting stances. A boy was floating towards us, covered in some weird mist.

"What business?" Kaz asked, using the traditional Kerch greeting. The boy stood in front of us and punched Kaz in the jaw. Kaz took a swing at the boy with his cane but it went straight through him. Was this boy a ghost? Well I hope this ghost has a heart. I thought as I squeezed my fingers into a fist, taking control of the boy's pulse. His head turned towards me and he inhaled. I noticed that red liquid seemed to be in the air around him. I started to feel faint and realized he was sucking the blood from my body. My knees gave way and I collapsed, my fingers coming lose of the closed fist as I began to lose consciousness. Kaz was by my side in an instant. I could see his lips forming my name but I couldn't hear him. Who was that boy? No one could do what we had just seen him do, it wasn't possible. I saw the boy hovering behind Kaz with a needle in his hand.

"Behind you." I croaked out. I saw Kaz turn in time to see a needle being pushed in his neck. A second later he was laying  unconscious beside me. I just had time to brush my fingers to his gloved hand when I felt a prick in my neck. The world grew black in a matter of seconds.
