I awoke to the feeling of someone shaking me.
"Ava! Wake up!" a voice was whispering.
"Wha..." I groaned.
"Get up! We gotta go!" the voice said.
"Where...what time..?"
"It's like 8. Grow up."
I had recognized the voice to be my sister's.
"Cassidy, where are we going?"
"You'll see..."
"I had plans with Calvin today!" I exclaimed sleepily.
"You can fuck him later, now get up."
"WHAT DID YOU SAY?!"
"Nothing!"
I glared at her, and rose from my bed. I stretched, and hobbled downstairs with my sister so I could get some coffee. I am not used to getting up so early on a Sunday.
I saw my parents waiting for us at the table. Mom was working on a crossword puzzle, and dad was reading the newspaper.
I groaned, as I walked into my kitchen to get a cup of coffee.
"It's fresh, I got it this morning. You may need to microwave it if it isn't hot enough." said my dad.
"Thanks. Now why did Cassidy get me up so early?"
"Well, we were thinking that we could do something, as a family."
"...okay. But why do I have to get up so early?"
"We're going kayaking."
"Oh."
I used to go kayaking a lot as a kid. It's good to go early so you don't burn alive from the sun that is constantly beating down on you. It gets super hot in the afternoon, so it is of best interest to go early.
"Who am I sharing a canoe with?"
"You have your old one."
"Dad, I haven't been kayaking in at least 5 years."
"Well, it's a good time to get back into it!"
"I guess."
"Go get ready, we'll leave in about 30 minutes."
I groaned, and trudged back upstairs with my cold coffee.
~~~~~
I threw my hair back and into a baseball cap. I feel like an idiot.
I felt Cassidy pass by me in the hallway, and she smacked the bill of my hat.
"It actually looks good on you."
"Why do you sound so surprised?"
She didn't answer my question, and I went out in my backyard to help my dad with the canoes.
He was carrying a small, light blue kayak out of the shed.
"Aya!" I yelled.
I ran up to my dad and hugged the kayak. But I felt a spiderweb, and dropped it.
"Oh, I missed Aya."
"Is Aya the kayak?"
"Yes."
"Where did the name come from?"
"Well, since my name is Ava , I wanted something similar. So, I replaced the middle letter with a different letter and I thought a 'y' was suitable."
