I awoke to the sound of wind and rain hitting the side of my home. I glanced at my clock.
9:00?! I gotta go!
Wait...what day is it?
I turned on my phone and searched for the date.
Saturday, September 13, 2014.
I signed a breath of relief. I lay back down on my bed and check my Instagram feed. After a few minutes of scrolling, I decided to go downstairs to get some breakfast. I hobble down the staircase, past the living room, dining room, and into the kitchen.
Does mom work today? I hope so, I need some time to myself.
I peeked around my pantry for a bite to eat. I spotted a box of doughnuts, with a note placed on top of it. My curiosity got the best of me, and I opened the folded piece of paper to read its contents.
Dearest Ava,
Unfortunately, I have to work today in this brisk weather. I got you some doughnuts so you didn't have to make anything. Oh by the way, I hope you don't mind that I invited your friend in. He was wandering around the street before I was about to leave, so I invited him inside for some tea. Quite the nice boy! I don't know if he will still be here by the time you wake, but just so you know!
Love you lots,
Mommy <3Aw, thanks mom. What is she going on about with one of my friends being here? I only have a few friends, and only one knows where I live...oh shit.
I dashed through the house, in search of the stalker that I call Calvin. I check every room in the house, but no sign of the inconspicuous boy. I sigh and move back to the kitchen, to brew myself some coffee. I go back to my living room and lay on the large, leather couch. I lay my wrist on my forehead and take a deep breath. The sound of the coffee brewer fills the room, as the steamy, hot liquid drips from the nozzle.
I got back up to retrieve my cup of hot java. I sit back up on the couch and observe the steam from the coffee dance above my cup. I attempted to take a sip from the beverage, but my hair got to it first. The fine strands of my hair dipped into the hot liquid before my lips could reach the rim of my cup. I sighed, and I placed my cup on the coffee table in front of me. Grabbing the hair tie that I still had on my wrist from the previous night, I pulled my hair into a low ponytail.
I went to pick up my cup again, when I was disrupted my the sound of a toilet flush.
...really?
The bathroom door creaked open, and I was again face-to-face with Calvin.
"Hi." he said plainly.
"Why are you here?"
"Well, I was waiting outside when a nice lady saw me and offered me to have some tea. So I came in, and I just stayed here."
"...why?"
"Because I don't want to go back out in the snow...I wasn't prepared for cold weather."
"It's snowing? It's only September..."
"Yeah, it started snowing when I was walking and I thought it was too late to go back."
"I see...do you want something to drink?"
"Sure."
"Coffee, tea, or hot chocolate?"
"I've always been more of a tea kind of guy."
"Okay."
I got up and started a brew of earl grey tea. I got some doughnuts, and went back to the couch. Calvin was seated on the couch.
I sat down next to him, and passed him a doughnut.
"Thanks."
"Your tea should be up momentarily."
"Thanks for the hospitality."
"Well, you're technically a guest, so I have to be polite."
"But I'm your friend?"
"So?"
"Whatever. You didn't have to do this so I'll just have to pay you back somehow."
"Whatever you say."
We sat there in silence for a while, until Calvin spoke up.
"Is it just you and your mum?"
"Well, my dad is in the military, and my sister is in college. My mother used to work for the military too, but she took off once she had me. The babysitter that took care of my sister quit, so now when my dad comes back for a while, my mom will most likely go back."
"Oh...I'm sorry."
For what?
"It's fine."
A few more moments of silence passed.
"Do you only put your hair up at home? It looks good like that."
My hair was just dripping in my coffee...
"I don't like when my hair is up, so I usually just keep it down."
"That's a shame. I'm sure it's beautiful any way you put it."
I guess this is okay...
"Thanks."
I leaned over and kissed him on the cheek.
He looked down at me with shock and surprise in his eyes.
"...are your lips always that hot? Like they're burning."
"It's the coffee."
"Ah..."
More awkward silence passed.
"Hey," I finally spoke up. "when do you have to leave?"
"Okay fine then, I can take a hint." Calvin chuckled.
"No, I mean I just don't want my mom or sister to come home and to see me with you."
"Oh, I don't know."
"Well, you can stay as long as you need to."
"Thanks, Ava."
"Mhm."
We drifted into a peaceful silence, enjoying each other's company.
Well this is a way to start a Saturday...
