I caught her in my arms before she could fall.
But a shot rang out in the air.
Chandini jerked violently into my chest, letting out a choked sob. I froze for a few seconds as the silence fell around me, then regained consciousness and peered down at her. With her in my arms, I collapsed on my knees, my head landing on my lap. Her eyes watered as she looked at me, her lips quivered, and a hand was placed on her chest. The hand was soaked in blood, which had begun to leak from between her palms and spread throughout her clothes.
I could feel time slowing down, voices muffled as if I were submerged in water, and the pressure suppressing every sound I made. I could not say anything.
Chandini looked at me through painful eyes; her lips twisted in agony as blood poured from her hands.
However, my body worked faster than my mind, and I found myself pressing my hands against her chest.
Rohit shot her.
"No, no, no, no, no." I mumbled repeatedly while pressing my palm on her wound. A painful sob escapes Chandini's lips.
My eyes watered, and everything became blurry.
"Please! No!" I shook my head, and she smiled. Painfully.
Chandini opened her mouth to speak but choked. "I-it is fine."
I shook my head again and applied more pressure, eliciting a painful expression on her face. I raised my head, frantically scanning the room, and discovered Rohit on his knees, hands cuffed behind his back.
"No! Chandini, sweetheart! It was not supposed to be you! No-." Rohit screamed, and the officer behind him pushed his head into the ground.
Sumit and Rahul ran towards me, but they came to a halt when they saw Chandini in a pool of her own blood. My hands were beginning to tremble from fear.
"Ambulance! Fucking call the ambulance!" I yelled, and Sumit quickly took out his phone.
"Hey baby, stay with me." I quickly tapped her face with one hand while pressing her chest with the other. Her eyes started to close gradually. "Don't you dare close your eyes! Please, stay with me."
Rahul kneeled next to us. "We need to take her to the hospital!" Let's not waste our time here."
With a swift nod of my head, Rahul assisted me in lifting her into my arms so that the wound remained pressed against my chest. I hurriedly exited the building and made my way towards the vehicle. I carefully entered the car with Chandini, and Rahul took the wheel as Sumit arrived.
When I looked down at Chandini, she had half-lidded eyes and was looking up at me. "You will be fine; just keep your eyes open, Chandini. Please."
"I... I am trying," she says softly.
