34. Don't Forget

It wasn't like Dabi was looking forward to this, well at least not like some stupid love sick teenager. But it wasn't as if he wasn't looking forward to it either. It was a big week for them. Six year anniversary and six year birthday. It seemed damn near impossible for that much time to have passed. Who was he kidding, he had been silently waiting for this for a long time. 

The odd thing was how little that Hawks had mentioned about it. Under normal circumstances, he wouldn't shut the hell up about it. All that Dabi would hear about was their anniversary and Shinji's birthday for weeks. But this year, he had been radio silent. To be fair to him, they had been going through an absolutely crazy year so it was to be expected that he was distracted.

It was pissing Dabi off. It wasn't like it was hard to forget their anniversary, seeing as how it was the day before their son's birthday. Shinji sure as hell hadn't forgotten his birthday, and had made it very clear for the last week that he was almost a big boy. Or at least that he was a bigger boy, because he was already a big boy. 

Not a single plan made, nothing. Hawks was still asleep and Dabi was waiting for him to wake up. If he didn't tell him Happy Anniversary the first thing when he woke up, he was sure that he had forgotten. He couldn't sleep anyways so his best use of time was to sit and wait for him.

Hawks nearly jumped out of his skin, Dabi's blue eyes staring at him in the dark. "What the fuck are you doing? Why are you staring at me like that?"

"I was just awake," Dabi's voice was very accusatory for being the first thing Hawks heard in the morning. If he didn't know better, he'd think that Dabi was plotting to smother him in his sleep. He wouldn't do that though, not when burning him was so much easier. 

"Well if you're awake, could you maybe not stare at me, like a psycho," Hawks mumbled, rolling back over in the bed. 

"What are you up to today?" Dabi asked in the same accusatory voice. 

"It's Wednesday, I work." Hawks grumbled, burying his face in the pillow. "You should know this."

"You're working today?" Dabi's voice broke, the accusation replaced with hurt, "You really couldn't get off today?"

Hawks sighed, "No, why would I? You know some of us have to actually work for a living. I can't just take off work because you don't want me to go."

"Oh fuck you," Dabi shouted, throwing his pillow at Hawks' head, "You're such a fucking asshole." He leapt out of the bed, not wanting to be near him any longer. That's what he really thought, that it wasn't important enough to get work off. That Dabi just sat around all day. Like he didn't have three kids to take care of or anything. 

What did Dabi care anyways? Six years wasn't really that big of a deal anyways. Not like five years, or ten years. But why the hell would he say that? Was he just too asleep to hide his true feelings? Did he really not care about Touya, or worse did he resent him? Hate him even?

His heart ached all morning, barely even nodding at Hawks as he left for work. Luckily the twins had been extra fussy that morning, so he could focus all his attention on them. Hawks took Shinji to school, and he was busy jumping up and down the whole time about his birthday. This had to be intentional. There was absolutely no way that Hawks wasn't choosing to forget, choosing to hurt Dabi. 

Most of the morning he spent just trying to figure out what it was that he did wrong. Clearly he must have pissed of Hawks in some major way. There wasn't another explanation for why he was acting like this. Unless he was hit by some quirk, something that made him act like a complete and utter asshole. 

The likelihood that happened was next to nothing and as much as Dabi needed something to hold onto to explain his husband's behavior away, that didn't seem like it. Once he had finally gotten both of the twins down for their nap, everything was able to truly sink in.
