This year would be your first Halloween with the BAU, meaning there was a high chance that the case (if it landed on or near Halloween night) would be unique. You had joined the team in November of last year. You, Emily and Spencer headed toward the conference room, Spencer holding a creepy Halloween mask.
"The cool thing about Halloween is that it's a uniquely American holiday." Spencer started, Emily rolling her eyes when Spencer wasn't looking. You nudged her, disappointed.
You were the only BAU team member who actually found it fun to hang out with Spencer outside of work. The others always made excuses, which pissed you off. Spencer may have been younger than all of them and he certainly had a different definition of 'fun', but he was their teammate. He was their friend. They should've been making more of an effort to hang out with him, regardless of what he wanted to do.
"I mean, despite it's obvious origins in the Celtic Festival of Samhain and the Christian All Saints Day, it really is a melting pot of various immigrants' traditions and beliefs. It became a little more commercialized in the 1950s with trick-or-treat, and today it rivals only Christmas in terms of popularity." He finished, just as the three of you reached the doorway connecting the conference room to the walkway.
"All I asked was what he was doing this weekend." Emily explained to Rossi, JJ, Derek and Penelope, all of whom had gotten into the office early.
"I'm toying with the notion of either going to the Edgar Allan Poe Shadow Puppet Theatre or the re-enactment of the 19th century Phantasmagoria." Spencer smiled.
"I don't want to know." Derek spoke up.
"Oh, yeah, you do. Phantasmagorias are these amazing pre-cinema projected ghost shows invented in France, where the showman attempted to spook the audience using science magic. And it just so happens that I have an extra ticket." He suggested, a huge grin on his face.
"Tempting." Penelope tried to look interested. Before you could speak up, Hotch walked into the room.
"We're going to Detroit." He told.
"It's Halloween weekend." Spencer immediately frowned.
"Arson investigators have noticed a 3-year trend in the days leading up to Halloween." Penelope started, pressing a button on her remote.
"Devil's Night." Spencer muttered.
"This unsub is killing only these 3 days out of the year. How's he doing it?" Emily asked, opening the file in front of her.
"He's burning his victims alive." Penelope was clearly disturbed by the cause of death.
"He's abducting seemingly random people and dumping their bodies in abandoned parts of town. He struck again last night." Hotch explained.
"Yeah. Tony Torrell, 40. He lives in the suburbs, but he was found 20 miles away in the Rivertown District." Penelope explained, putting Tony's image on the screen behind her.
"He's attacking the city at its most vulnerable time." Rossi noted.
"What does he do during the rest of the year?" Spencer asked, curious.
"He's dormant." Hotch shook his head.
"You know, arsonists are typically white males between 17 and 25 who can't stay away from fire." Spencer told, looking at the rest of the team.
