SUMMARY:
When Derek catches Y/N and Spencer sleeping in a bed together, naked, while on a case, Y/N does everything she can to stop Derek from telling the team, especially Hotch, but he manages to change her mind.——————————
The bureau doesn't have any specific rules or regulations when it comes to two Agents dating each other, but it is highly frowned upon and can result in releases or transfers if the couple is outed. It doesn't help that unsafe and hostile environments can be created if a couple break up.
This is why Derek couldn't stop his jaw from dropping when he walked into Spencer and Y/N's hotel room, seeing them sleeping in the same bed the morning after the team landed in Miami for a case.
Y/N's head rested on Spencer's exposed chest, his left arm draped around her waist. The blanket was high enough around Y/N's body to avoid much exposure.
The other bed in the room was untouched, their clothes from the previous day strewn messily around the bed they slept on.
Considering their go bags were unopened, Derek assumed that both of his younger teammates were completely bare under the blankets, making him simultaneously roll his eyes in disgust and chuckle. Whether or not they had done anything...sexual, was unknown to Derek. He refused to snoop around for any proof of sexual activity, so he simply grabbed his phone from his pocket and snapped a photo. Before either of them woke up, Derek left the room and dialled Spencer's number, waiting a few moments before he picked up.
"Morning kid. Hotch, JJ and Prentiss are already at the station. Rossi is waiting for us down in the lobby. Both you and Y/N need to get up and dressed within the next 5 minutes or we're leaving for the station without you." Derek warned before ending the call, heading down to meet with Rossi.
In record time - 2 minutes, 30 seconds - Y/N and Spencer were down in the hotel lobby, dressed. Their badges and phones were in their pockets, and their guns were in their holsters on their hips.
"Sleep well?" Derek winked as Rossi drove him, Spencer and Y/N to the station.
"Like a baby." Y/N nodded, feeling her phone buzz.
Unlocking her phone and seeing the message from Derek, her face dropped slightly. She quickly put it down and tried to keep cool while Spencer kept reading the book he pulled out from his messenger bag.
As soon as they reached the station, Hotch immediately gave everyone their tasks. Spencer and Rossi: M.E. Emily and JJ: Family interviews. Derek and Y/N: Newest crime scene.
While driving to the newest crime scene, Y/N let out a deep exhale, needing to talk to Derek.
"Derek, what you saw this morning..." Before Y/N could continue, Derek chuckled.
"...I only have 3 questions. 1. when, 2. how, 3. why haven't you said anything to anyone?" Derek asked.
"11 months ago." Y/N started, earning a look of curiosity from Derek.
"We were drunk in his apartment after one of our more...difficult cases and one thing led to another. The next morning we made our relationship official." Y/N continued.
"We haven't told anyone because we both know that relationships between Agents are frowned upon. There could be releases, or transfers, if anyone were to find out about us. Plus the possible disapproval from Hotch isn't fun." Y/N scoffed.
"Hotch won't really care, as long as you and Reid remain professional in the field and at the office. He would probably have to separate you two during cases, but that's standard." Derek told, keeping his eyes on the road while he drove.
"Well, Hotch isn't the only variable I'm worried about." Y/N muttered.
"Look, we both know Strauss is a stickler for the rules, but you said it yourself; relationships between Agents are frowned upon. There are no rules or regulations stating that relationships between Agents are prohibited. She'd most likely get you both to sign some forms and make sure you stay professional in the field, but that's it." Derek explained.
"Didn't you hear me when I said that there are possible releases and transfers?" Y/N added.
"Reid's been with the team for 7 years now, and you've been with the team for just over 6 years. Both Strauss and Hotch would be stupid to transfer either of you to a different unit. You're both too valuable to the team." Derek smiled.
"If we were to tell the team, which I'd have to be sure he's okay with, how would we do it?" Y/N asked as Derek pulled up to the location where the crime scene was.
"It's up to you. I don't really get a say in the best way to reveal something like this. Just, don't make the reveal too complicated, otherwise Garcia might assume your news is a pregnancy, or an engagement to be married." Derek noted.
"Right." Y/N nodded, showing her I.D. to the local cop after Derek showed his.
———
3 days later, the team were back in Quantico and Derek remained the only BAU member who knew about Y/N and Spencer's relationship.
During their trip home after landing, Y/N told Spencer what happened with Derek. She told him about the message, and about the following conversation. When Spencer agreed that was time for the team to know, they came up with a plan. They would go to work and be slightly romantic toward each other - enough to tell the team, but not enough to anger Hotch with the PDA.
So, the next morning, Spencer and Y/N walked hand-in-hand from the elevator to the BAU bullpen doors. Garcia was the first to spot them and instantly started congratulating them on their relationship, unable to believe that they had been dating for 11 months without the world's best team of profilers finding out.
Derek smiled when he saw the pair, winking at Y/N. Emily and JJ, like Garcia, started celebrating, giving Y/N and Spencer hugs - which to anyone else would look like they were celebrating a pregnancy or engagement announcement.
Rossi entered the bullpen, learned of the relationship and simply gave Y/N a kiss to her cheek, before warning Spencer not to hurt her in any way. Y/N was always closer to Rossi in a father-daughter way, so the kiss to the cheek made her smile, as if she was happy that her 'father' approved of her boyfriend.
Hotch simply said 'good for you both', before handing them each two pages worth of files to read through, sign and give back to him by the end of the day.
Derek: I told you telling the team wouldn't be bad, didn't I? And I was right about the forms!
Y/N looked down at her message from Derek and smiled.
Y/N: Yes, Derek. You were right. Both about the forms, and that telling the team wouldn't be bad.
Derek chuckled as he read Y/N's message.
