SUMMARY:
Y/N finds Spencer in a lot of trouble after returning from the most recent case. Y/N makes it her mission to help Spencer get back on track.⚠️TW: Overdose⚠️
——————————
The night before Y/N and the team were briefed on the case they'd be investigating, Y/N called Spencer like she did every week. He seemed fine. But, when he came into work the next morning, he was quiet, avoiding eye contact. Everyone knew that something was wrong and they all tried to find out what had upset him, but he became angry and shut himself away. If they weren't discussing the case and its details, he wasn't speaking to anyone.
After the case, when the team finally touched down in Quantico, Spencer was first off the jet, ignoring the team as they called his name several times.
It was only after 24 missed calls and texts that Y/N finally showed up to Spencer's home at 11:45 PM. She knocked on the door several times, confused when Spencer didn't answer. Even if he was very upset or angry, he wouldn't ignore his manners to look through his peephole and let Y/N in. She grabbed his spare key and unlocked his front door.
"Spencer?" Y/N called out, earning no response.
"Spencer, it's Y/N. What happened?" Y/N called out again, but was met with more silence.
Moving into Spencer's bedroom, she saw what looked to be a small empty bottle resting in the doorway between his bedroom and bathroom. She immediately recognised the label and rushed to the bathroom, her heart dropping when she saw Spencer sitting on the floor, his back against the furthest wall. He'd managed to tie his belt around his upper arm, a needle resting only a few feet away. With the empty bottle and the needle as evidence, she dialled 9-1-1 and explained the situation. Once the ambulance was confirmed to be on its way, Y/N dialled Hotch's number, expressing her worry. 10 minutes later, Hotch and Y/N watched as Spencer was wheeled into the nearest hospital, being taken away by nearby nurses.
"I'll get in contact with a nearby rehab center." Hotch went to grab his phone, but Y/N stopped him.
"Please don't Hotch." Y/N shook her head.
"Don't? Why, Y/N? Not only did he relapse, but he overdosed and nearly died. He needs help." Hotch furrowed his eyebrows.
"Spencer is a private person, Hotch. He won't want to talk to random strangers. He'd rather suffer, than tell some random healthcare professional his history with Dilaudid." Y/N reminded him.
"Just because he's a private person, doesn't mean we should risk his health by making him get clean alone." Hotch warned.
"He won't be alone. I'll help him. He'll talk to me, Hotch. I can withstand any negative reactions. I want to ensure that he gets sober again. If he goes to rehab, he'll play by their rules and convince them after a while that he's okay. But me? I'll be on his ass every moment of every day, making sure that he will one day get above - and beyond - his previous record of 5 years and 6 months sober." Y/N insisted.
"Fine. But if something goes wrong, or you feel you can't handle helping him, call me and we'll get him into rehab. Promise?" Hotch exhaled.
"I promise." Y/N nodded, watching as Hotch left the hospital. She understood why he was so worried, but she knew she could help Spencer. When a nurse let Y/N know that Spencer was in a hospital room, Y/N expressed her intentions to help Spencer, and the nurse was hesitant, but understood.
After 5 hours, Spencer was finally awake. He seemed a little out of it, but when he saw Y/N, he smiled slightly.
"I'm...I'm so sorry." Spencer exhaled.
"It's okay, Spencer. Can you tell me why?" Y/N held his hand.
"...right before the case, my mother's doctor called me and told me that my mother had...she passed away. I tried to keep myself from breaking down, throwing myself into solving the case. But when I got home...I couldn't resist. I knew what Dilaudid could do and before I could think about my actions, the belt was on my arm, the needle was full of liquid and I was out like a light." Spencer cried.
"It's okay Spencer." Y/N put her arms around Spencer and hugged him tightly. Once he had stopped crying, Y/N told him her plan. He was worried at first, but once Y/N ensured that she'd keep helping him, regardless, he accepted her help.

For the next month, Y/N stood by Spencer's side. She worked cases remotely so she could keep an eye on Spencer. Any and all evidence of Dilaudid was discarded. The first few nights away from hospital were hard, with Spencer's physical journey starting off rough. He suffered a lot of vomiting, cold sweats, and shaking. He tried many times to escape Y/N's grasp in order to obtain the drug. There were a few instances of physical violence, but Y/N dealt with it, knowing that eventually, Spencer would be okay. Y/N even heard Spencer curse more times in the month that she stayed with him, than in the 5 years and 6 months that she had known him.
After 5 months of struggle, Y/N found Spencer sober enough to return to work. She walked with him into the BAU bullpen and watched as JJ, Emily, Penelope and Rossi watched his return with confusion and shock. Much to Y/N's surprise, he was honest with the team. He told them about the phone call with the news about his mother. He told them about the subsequent overdose and visit to the hospital.
"And you found him, Y/N?" Penelope confirmed. Y/N couldn't reply with words, still trying to burn the sight from her mind. All she could do was nod.
"I wouldn't be alive if it weren't for Y/N. All my thanks go to you." Spencer wrapped his arm around Y/N's shoulder, pulling her in for a side-hug, a hug she happily accepted.
