The first day of Senior Year was a day every teenager was supposed to look forward to, and a while ago Brooke had been one of those teenagers. So had Bonnie, Elena, and Caroline. But now, after everything they had gone through in the last year, it didn't feel quite as exciting as it was supposed to.

When they were little Caroline had tried to convince them that they should perform a choreographed routine on this day, and luckily the other three had talked her out of it.

Like they had planned as children, the four of them parked right next to each other, and got out of their cars, standing in front of their school. It should have been an invigorating moment for them as young adults, but in reality it felt quite dampening and sad.

"Here we are. Senior year" beamed Caroline

All four of them wore smiles, but anyone could have seen how there was no joy in any of their eyes.

"Anyone else think it should feel slightly more empowering?" asked Bonnie

Brooke nodded "Yeah I feel like shit to be honest"

Her twin sister huffed, "Ok. So prank night was a bust. But we are accepting it, and we are moving on"

Bonnie chuckled "You're right. I mean, why should I let the fact that my boyfriend is seeing the ghost of his dead girlfriend hinder this experience?" That had somehow been the most surprising thing to happen so far this year. Jeremy had been seeing visions of Vicki all summer apparently, and didn't tell Bonnie until recently, so now Bonnie was furious with him for keeping it from her, considering his history with Vicki.

"Yes! And why should I let the fact that my boyfriend was turned into a hybrid put a damper on an otherwise fabulous day" said Caroline. Not only was she furious with Klaus for what he did, but now she was angry with Tyler because instead of being angry about this like the rest of them, he seemed overly relived, which was more concerning.

"And why should I let the fact that I was held hostage by the original hybrid for an entire summer, who is continuing to threaten me, bother me at all?" added Brooke sarcastically.

They all then turned to Elena, who sighed. "Today's our anniversary. Technically, Stefan and I met on the first day of school last year"

Caroline paused. "Yeah. You win"

Bonnie glanced down at the scarf on Elena's neck, which covered the bite mark Stefan had left on her last night. "Are you sure you want to be here?"

She nodded "I have to be here. I have to put it behind me. New year. New life"

"Let's do this" groaned Brooke, slinging her bag over her shoulder, and then the four of them walked into their school.

It did feel strange heading into the building for a first day, for the last time ever. Mystic Falls had been her home since birth, and the very idea of her time in this town coming to an end was a little daunting.
