Brooke couldn't remember the night before. She had cried so much that the hours flew by in minutes and eventually the morning sun was piercing her eyes. She had not left the Mikaelson home, but the sight of Klaus's grey body had brought her further into the darkness so she curled herself up in Klaus's bedroom, just breathing in his scent and sobbing more and more as she realised he was gone.
"Brooke?"
Elijah. The young girl wiped her fresh tears and sped down the stairs, finding him at the base of the staircase.
She sobbed and threw herself into his arms and Elijah held her close, letting her tears soak his suit jacket.
"He's gone" she whispered through her tears
Elijah sighed "I know. What happened?"
She sniffed and pulled her face off of his shoulder. "T-they ambushed us. They grabbed his heart and stopped it somehow"
"I imagine your Bennett witch friend had something to do with it" he grumbled "I have seen this before. He is not dead, only desecrated but the spell can be broken if we have a witch and his body. Where is it?"
"Gone" said Brooke "The Salvatores took it last night and I don't know where they have it"
He huffed "Fine. I'll retrieve it from them and once my brother is awake he will punish everyone for what they did to him"
Brooke shook her head "We can't. Before she died your mother did something to Alaric and turned him into a vampire more powerful than any of us, but he's a vampire hunter like Mikael. He has a white oak stake and he will never let us wake Klaus. And even if we did, his life is linked to Elena's so if he dies then she does too and I won't let that happen"
Elijah frowned "Still? After all the pain she has caused you again, you would rather keep her alive, even if that means Alaric might hunt you?"
"I would" she said "Elena is my friend and I will not let her die. But as long as Alaric is alive he won't let us wake Klaus"
"There will be another way" he said
"How?" she asked "How are we supposed to find Klaus's body and wake him up without my friends, or worse, Alaric, killing both of us?"
He sighed "I will strike a bargain with them. If they return Niklaus's body to me then I will not wake him as long as Elena is alive. I will do whatever I can to hide from Alaric and when Elena dies naturally I will wake him so that he cannot hurt her"
Brooke nodded "Okay. Where would we go?"
"We?" he replied, confused. "You aren't coming with me, Brooke"
She scoffed "Yes, I am. Without... without your family there's nothing left for me in Mystic Falls and if I stay, I'll spend the rest of eternity living my life to protect Elena, again and again, and sooner or later my life will be sacrificed for hers. I'm done living this way, Elijah"
