Klaus had not slept a wink all night. While Rebekah went to retrieve the final white oak stake from the Lockwood caves he had been packing up all of his things to prepare to leave Mystic Falls.
When the house was ready to go Klaus had moved onto his study last and he was supposed to start putting his paintings and drawings away, but his eyes kept on drifting to the blank canvas he had set up in the corner. He had once intended to use it, but whenever he had lifted up his brush his imagination had run dry.
But this time he seemed drawn to it and when he lifted his brush to the canvas it was as if his hand was moving mindlessly and his painting came to life under his skills.
The background was dark, with green bushes standing out amongst the blackness and marble pillars, wrapped with small lights, decorated either side of the canvas. In the middle was a blank silhouette.
He knew what fit in that silhouette but the thought of Brooke Forbes stumped him. She had looked so beautiful wearing the necklace she bought him and the lights outside made her blue eyes glimmer with golden reflections flickering in them, and the very memory of that moment and how crestfallen she had looked when he walked away made him hesitate.
Klaus had come to Mystic Falls to break his curse and become a hybrid and had stayed to create his own race and reunite his family in the place they had once called home, and he had done it all. He had succeeded and he had won, but the only thing he had never anticipated was that he would end up falling for Brooke Forbes. She was his only remaining tie to this place and because of her he was finding it hard to walk away and not look back, when he wanted her.
The door to his study flew open and in came Rebekah, snapping Nik out of his thoughts.
"What took you so long?" he asked gruffly.
"Alaric didn't want to hand over the stake. Luckily I'm quite the charmer" she said and then she pulled the white oak stake out of her jacket pocket to show him.
He raised his eyebrows "That's it?"
She beamed "Last of the white oak stakes that can kill us. Do you want to do the honours, or shall I?"
Klaus grabbed the stake from her and swiftly tossed it into the burning fire pit and he watched in relief as the wood burned into cinders and ash and his sister nodded. "Well, that's that, then"
"Pack your bags. We're leaving" he instructed her.
She frowned "Today?"
"Why not? There's nothing keeping us here." he said venomously "We'll grab the doppelganger and be off by sunset"
Rebekah scoffed "But tonight's the decade dance"
"So?"
"So I'm head of the committee. We have to go" She argued.
Klaus rolled his eyes "I'm not going to any dance"
Rebekah smirked. "Brooke will be there."
He paused and then returned to aggressively swiping his paint brush across the canvas. "That means nothing to me"
