Reid was right, a part in that book hit me hard, it was only 10:00pm so I got dressed in a pair of jeans and a cardigan, slipping on my converse and grabbing my keys and the book, his address is written sloppily on the front page. I find his apartment fairly quick. I knock softly on the door, hugging the book to my chest. It opens moments later, revealing a tired looking Spencer Reid.
"Hey, I uh, hit the hard part..." I say. He opens the door wider and I come in, noticing all the books he's got everywhere, on the floor, on the tables, on the couch. I sit down on the end of the couch. He hands me a cup of tea instead of coffee. I thank him and we sit there awkwardly for a second before I blurt out "So, what happened to you?"
He looks at me for a second. "You don't have to tell me if you don't want to."
"It's okay. We had a case a few months ago, boy named Tobias Hankel, he was a kid with Multiple Personality Disorder, he would pose as a technical support worker and hack into peoples computers before kidnapping them. He would call 911 before he killed them, we thought there were two of them. He killed spouses who cheated on each other, then he would post them online. We finally had a suspect, and JJ and I went to check out the house; we did and we began to leave but I saw the barn in the back." He starts to explain.
"What did the barn have to do with anything?" I asked, leaning in closer.
"The barn was in one of the videos, so I looked around the house, found all his computers. He saw me and ran to the barn; I made JJ and I split up,she searched the barn while I checked behind it, that's when I heard the two voices in the corn field. Riled up with adrenaline, I ran into the field alone, the two voices were arguing, we were convinced that there were two unsubs, then he attacked me. Bashed me over the head, I fell, he snatched my gun, JJ was stuck in the barn with the dogs. He was arguing with himself, two different voices, two different demeanor's. He kidnapped me and took me to a secondary location and tied me up. I can't go into detail but, he starved me and beat me but he changed personalities, to himself, Tobias, not Raphael, he was his father, and he gave me Dilaudid, I got flashbacks to my childhood and it-it helped. Raphael kept making me choose people to die, I had to beg and give hints to my team about where I was. Soon it got too much, he kept giving me the Dilaudid and Raphael knocked me back and I had a seizure, and I-I died."
I reach over and put my hand over his, squeezing it softly.
"Tobias gave me CPR and saved me, but he switched again and made me dig a hole; he was going to bury me alive, but my team finally found me. They had to kill him and I gave them hugs and thanked them, asked for a second alone with his body. I-I took the Dilaudid and I got addicted. I found this book and it helped. It helped me realize that I wasn't the only person going through things, that what happened to me, happened to other people too. I buried myself into my work, I was snapping on officials and on the families and my teammates. I got help eventually and got clean." He says.
"I was around 12, it was a normal night, I lied in bed, reading War and Peace. I finally settled down and fell asleep. My parents went to bed about an hour or two later, like usual. I was expected to be awoke by my parents that morning, but instead I was awoken by gunshots in the middle of the night. I heard my moms scream which made me get up and hid in the closet," I explained, my voice cracking. Spencer put his hand over mine like I did. "It went quiet and I heard the small creak in my door that happened when you opened it too far. I hugged my feet close to my chest, trying to be quiet. He snatched open the doors and I screamed. He drug me out of the closet and he-he touched me. Then he took a knife and I remember the words he said like it was yesterday." I take a deep breath, wiping my cheeks softly. "He said 'I'll make sure you always remember me' and he cut his initials in my shoulder, I see it every time I take a shower, every time I change my clothes, every time I want to wear a tank top or low neck, it's there. He was right, I'll always remember. A man named Jason Gideon solved my case. He helped me."
