Mako Mermaids: Rita Santos' Daughter

Chapter 24

Caitlan's POV:

I haven't spoke to Emma, Cleo and Rikki since they found out I was born a mermaid. I've seen Cleo, Rikki and a new girl Bella on the beach and we've exchanged smiles but that's about it. I prefer my friends anyway.

Zac asked if I wanted to go camping with him and Cam for a couple days. I've never been camping in my life, and I don't really fancy it. Plus, I prefer staying home with mum and Poseidon.

Me and mum were sat on the sofa, wrapped up in a blanket and cuddled up - hey I may be sixteen now but I'm never too old to have cuddles with my mum!

"What shall we do tonight, my little starfish?" Mum asked. "Mermaid stories?" I suggested. "Which stories would you like to hear sweetheart?" Mum smiled.

Rita's POV:
I already knew which stories Caitlan would ask for. "Same as usual Mum. You and Aunt Veridia and stories on the mermaid Nerissa" Caitlan smiled at me. "I must've told you these stories a million times"  I laughed, "I know but I love hearing about your hatchling days and the legends of Nerissa are extraordinary." Cait replied. "I didn't say I wouldn't tell them, darling. I love seeing your reactions when I tell you the stories." I smiled and Caitlan laid down on my knee, looking up at me.

"Well I never met Nerissa but she was a Northern mermaid, one of the most powerful. She had a daughter who was left with the Southern Pod and she had a son who she had to give up. Every mermaid would strive to be like her." I rested my hand on Caitlan's face as I told her the Nerissa story. "I wonder where her son is now." Caitlan said curiously. "What happened to Nerissa?" Cait asked. "I don't know sweetheart. Nobody does" I whispered. "Okay so on to me and Veridia. Hmmm... the first time me and Veridia were exposed to the Full Moon, I was completely confident, Veridia on the other hand tried to hide in the kelp. I helped her overcome her fear though." I smiled and looked down, Caitlan dozed off. I rolled my eyes and kissed her head. I didn't want to disturb my baby girl so I laid down on the sofa arm and fell asleep.

Caitlan's POV:

I woke up to my phone ringing. I realised me and mum fell asleep on the sofa. Evie was calling. "Hey, Evie. Something wrong?" I answered. "Nope nothing's wrong, Zac and Cam came back early from the camping trip, we're meeting at the cafe. You coming?" I sat up and mum yawned. "Yeah, be there in a bit."

I got ready, mum had a bit of prep work to do before school starts up again next week.

I got to the cafe and Evie, Zac and Cam were sat outside, they already got me a watermelon smoothie. "Hey, I heard you cut the camping trip short. You haven't got the flu or anything have ya?" I sat down and drank some of my smoothie. "Ha ha. We just decided to leave Mako early" Zac shrugged and I choked on my smoothie. "Y-you went camping on Mako?" I asked. "Yeah, I thought I told you?" Zac replied and I shook my head. "Why? It's basically abandoned and it's swarmed with bugs" I pointed out. Cam and Zac shrugged. "Wanna help me at my shop for a bit Cait?" Evie asked. I nodded and went inside with Evie.

I started helping Evie with the clothes, Joe came up to us. "Staff only helping I'm afraid" he scolded. Me and Evie looked at each other trying not to laugh. "Two words Joe: The Reef" I smirked. "You're still holding that against me?" He whined. "Until death do us part!" I retaliated, Evie high fived me. "Wow Santos, you're full of fire" Joe flirted with me and got close. "And still only sixteen, maybe in a few years, clownfish" I smiled. Joe turned around and saw David looking in disgust. "Bro, marry that girl! Or I will" Joe said before he left. "Gross! Do you have feelings for-?" David grossed out and I laughed. "No! Come on I'm just winding you both up!" Evie couldn't stop laughing.

The next day, me and mum decided having a mummy-daughter day. We're sat in the Grotto looking through the photo albums and the things from the sea we've collected over the years. My phone rang. "Hey Evester, I'm not in today" I smiled. "Oh yeah I know. I just need to rant. These three strange girls showed up, no clue who they are. Started asking about Zac" Evie said. Mum looked at me, we were both puzzled. I told mum about Zac camping on Mako with Cam, but there's no way they found the Moon Pool, they can't have. "Huh, weird. Has he said anything about some new girls or anything?" I asked. "Nope, I've never seen them before and Zac certainly hasn't mentioned anything." Evie replied.

Who are these girls?
