Mako Mermaids: Rita Santos' Daughter

Chapter 37

Caitlan's POV:

Me and mum just caught Zac and Cam fighting near the lockers. We pulled Zac to the side. "Zac, some people may not agree with your decision to put back the trident, but you did the right thing" I said to him. Mum then invited him to our lesson with the girls tomorrow morning.

"We have a visitor" mum smiled before we started. Zac walked in. Nixie wasn't happy. "What's he doing here?" She scolded. "I invited him. He's stuck between two worlds and wants to know more. Although we don't really know much about mermen" mum replied. "How come?" Zac asked. "There was a huge war between mermaids and mermen long ago" I told him. "Exactly. A war" Nixie sneered, then she told him that he's the reason that the Mako Pod fled and stormed out.

Lyla and Sirena went to try to talk to Nixie, to no avail. Zac thanked me and mum for trying, then left. "Cait, will you come with me to talk to him?" Lyla asked me. "Yeah course" I smiled and we linked arms.

Zac was stood on the beach. Lyla asked if he'd ever just stopped in the ocean and just listened to the surroundings. "I think it's time we showed you" I smiled, me and Lyla grabbed Zac's hands and we ran into the ocean.

We swam into the deep blue; Lyla closed Zac's eyes and I gently touched his ear, telling him to listen. A humpback whale swam nearby, and Zac opened his eyes and was in awe. A couple of my shark friends came along, both Zac and Lyla were startled slightly, but the sharks swam around me and cuddled into me slightly before swimming away.

I swam back, mum and Sirena were sat in the Grotto. Lyla joined us not long after. Nixie came in, asking if it was safe to go home, because Lyla took Zac to the Moon Pool. Lyla then told us that she wants Zac to join the pod. Mum, Nixie and Sirena scolded her. "Cait? Can you back me up here please?" Lyla pleaded. "As much as I'd love to, if Zac was even considered to join the pod, he'd have to show he's earned it. He's the first merman that our kind have seen in eons. I mean I loved swimming with you both today, and I'll always be up for a swim with him and help him to understand the ocean, but convincing the pod is a completely different task" I told her. "But can't you persuade Veridia? She'll listen to you" Lyla asked. "Veridia is stubborn. And as strong as our bond is, I can't jeopardise that. I trust Zac with my life, but if Veridia even found out about the trident? Hell will break loose. I'm sorry, I agree with mum, Sirena and Nixie" I said sadly.

Me and Sirena were singing Across the Sea to mum, Lyla and Nixie, Zac came in and said he almost told Evie about being a merman. I went to the pool to just escape my thoughts for a while.

I sat with mum in the living room, Sirena came rushing in. "Cait. We need you. We think Cam and Nixie have gone to the trident, Evie is with them" she said panicked. I looked at mum. "Go darling" she told me.

I swam to Mako with Zac, Lyla and Sirena. Nixie had one of our Moon Rings and she said Evie was stuck in the trident chamber. Me and Zac rushed in. "No stop, she'll see your tails" Lyla tried to stop us. "She's my best friend" I told her and me and Zac went into the chamber, we each grabbed one of Evie's arms and got her out of there. "Y-you had tails!" She gasped.

Zac told Evie everything about being a merman, then Lyla told her about us being mermaids. "So you've never been afraid of the water?" Evie asked me and I shook my head.

The next day, me and mum were stood on the balcony, just looking at the sea. "Cait, Rita can we ask you something?" Lyla asked. "Anything" me and mum smiled. "We want you to come back with us tonight, to the pod" Sirena asked. "No. Mako is your home, it isn't mine anymore. My life is here. But if Caitlan wanted to come with you, I won't stop her" mum told them. Lyla and Sirena looked excited, mum had tears in her eyes. "As much as I'd love to, I can't. My life is with mum. She sacrificed everything for me. It's always been and always will be me and her against both worlds. But it won't be the same without you here" I teared up and the four of us hugged. "Besides, I can come to visit. We know a certain mermaid that has a soft spot for me" I said, hinting at Veridia. We laughed.

I sat on the sofa. "Cait, Evie's here to see you" mum said quietly and Evie walked in. "Miss Santos can you stay too?" Evie asked and mum sat next to me. "Did you fall into the Moon Pool like Zac did?" Evie asked me. I looked at mum. "No, she was born a mermaid Evie. Like I was" mum told her. "Those girls are lying to Zac. Cam said they don't want him to be back to normal and that it's a trap" Evie told me. "Cam? He's been jealous of Zac's powers. Those girls might not be my cousins, but I trust them Evie. They want their pod back home. And only Zac being turned back is the only way. Does Zac know Cam lied to you?" I asked and Evie shook her head. "Aren't you going to put your sister bracelet back on?" Evie smiled slightly at me. "One, two conditions. First condition: I duplicate it and give one to Lyla, Nixie and Sirena each. They've become part of my family. And second: after tonight, you join me on a swim one time" I smiled and Evie brought me into a hug. "Glad to have you back sis" she whispered and I told her to go tell Zac.

Me and mum went to the Grotto, the girls got the Moon Rings. Nixie told us that Cam is on Mako with the trident and they'll accept any punishment after. "Cait, we need all the mermaid power we can get" Lyla smiled. "Cait, go" mum urged me and Nixie threw me my Moon Ring.

We swam to the Moon Pool. We saw Cam fall and we used our Moon Rings to stop him from entering the Moon Pool. But the trident was stronger. Thankfully, Zac showed up and flung the trident out of Cam's hands and it broke. Cam fell in the water after the Full Moon left.

Back in the Grotto, Nixie tried to give mum the Moon Rings back, but mum said they've more than earned them. I then gave them the 'Not Sisters by Blood, Sisters by Heart' bracelets I duplicated. "These are for you. No matter how far across the ocean you are, you'll always be my sisters" I smiled and they put the bracelets on and gave me a hug.

We met up with Zac and Evie. Evie apologised to the girls. Me, Lyla, Zac, Nixie and Sirena then raced to Mako. I won. "How did you beat all of us? Land girl!" Lyla teased. "Are you forgetting who my mum and teacher is? Top of her class!" We laughed.

I swam home, mum was on the balcony looking out at the sea. I snuck up behind her and hugged her.

Rita's POV:
"You and me baby girl. Always" I whispered. I wrapped my arms around my baby girl and we smiled at the beautiful ocean. "You could have joined the pod you know. You proved your worth by helping save Mako last night" I told my Caitlan. "That's out of the question mum. I don't have to prove anything. As much as I'd love to be with other mermaids, I'd be lost without the one mermaid I'd need. I would never choose the pod over you. I may be grown up, but my life is with you, mummy" Caitlan smiled and she had tears in her eyes. "My little starfish" I kissed her head and wiped her tears. I'm so glad my Caitlan decided to stay. If she wanted to join the pod, I wouldn't have stopped her. But like she said and I've said all of her life: it's me and my baby girl against both worlds, always.

So that's this chapter and the series 1 arc finished! I may do a chapter or few between the end of season 1 and beginning of season 2!
