Chapter 41

Caitlan's POV:

Me and mum were sat on the roof, having a cup of tea. My phone rang. It was Evie. "Hey Evie what's up?" I answered. "It's my dad. He's doing diving tours on Mako" Evie said panicked. "Mako is beautiful, I can see why tourists would want to visit it. But that can pose a threat to merpeople." I said. "Just wanted to let you know. See ya later Cait" Evie hung up. Mum looked worried. "Promise you won't go swimming to Mako whilst Doug McLaren does those tours." I smiled, "I promise mum".

Me and Ondina were sat in the Grotto. Zac came in shouting and accusing Ondina of sabotaging Evie's dad's boat. Sirena and Mimi came in and told Zac that Ondina was with them all morning, trapped in the Moon Pool. Zac then looked at me. "You better not be about to accuse me either" I warned. "I know you wouldn't Cait." Zac said before leaving. "You don't think I did it, do you Caitlan?" Ondina asked, sounding hurt. "I believe you." I smiled and put my hand on her shoulder.

I swam to Mako with Mimi and Sirena. Evie joined us. Mimi told her Ondina had nothing to do with Evie's dad's boat, Evie said Zac told her. Mimi then started to talk about whales, how they love attention and gossip. "How do you know this?" Evie asked intrigued. "I speak Whale. Blue whale is difficult, but Humpback is easy." Mimi said proud. "You speak Humpback? Me too!" I said in Humpback. "You know it as well Cait?" Evie asked and I nodded. Evie then asked if we could get some humpbacks to come closer to the coast, me and Mimi swam off and told the Humpback I saved the other day, she was ecstatic and went to tell her friends. Me and Mimi high fived each other before returning, Mimi to Moon Pool, me to the Grotto. I filled Mum in with everything before we headed to bed.

Zac, Evie, Mimi, Ondina and Sirena came to the Grotto. Evie told Zac that me and Mimi speaks fluent Humpback. "No way! Is there anything about you Cait that I don't know?" Zac said in awe. Mimi then said in Humpback "I'm hungry, do you have any food?" Then Zac tried to apologise to Ondina in Humpback, but ended up saying that she has cute feet. We all laughed. "Humpback isn't your forte bro" I told Zac and he threw a cushion at me. "I also speak Shark." I smiled. "Me too!" Mimi said happily. We all ended up having a cushion fight.

Me and mum went to the Grotto - we heard Sirena say "I had pretty good teachers" to Evie, she was teaching her how to use her powers. We smiled and mum said "And we had an excellent student. I'm looking forward to seeing your progress when I return." Mum smiled and kissed my cheek before she left the Grotto.

Evie was really struggling to move the canoe with her powers. "You'll get there Evester. Don't overthink it" I encouraged her and Ondina and Mimi came in. Ondina was questioning why Sirena was such an expert. "If you're going to argue, take it out of the Grotto" I warned them. "You can't make us" Ondina laughed. "This is mine and my mum's home. If you recall, mum said you're welcome to stay here, as long as you respect us and our property" I smirked and Ondina sat down.

Sirena told Evie what me and mum taught her - to imagine the canoe moving towards her. "Is that how you got your Moon Ring? From Caitlan and Rita?" Ondina scoffed. "Me and Mimi got ours from the pod" "Where do you think Rita and Caitlan got theirs?" Sirena defended us. "Caitlan was never even part of our pod and Rita abandoned it years ago! Teaching methods have moved on. Did they even know the magical properties of sea nettles back then?" Ondina mocked. "Just so you know, I'll defend my mum so careful what you say, and fyi I knew the magical properties of sea nettles at the age of five, which mum taught me. And I got my Moon Ring at twelve, which was given to my mum by Veridia when I was just a baby for when I was ready." Ondina was speechless. "So you say. I think we should see what you've got" Ondina smirked again. "Actually I've got a better idea. Sirena, wanna show em what you're capable of?" I smiled at Sirena. "I think we're going to need something bigger than that canoe" Ondina replied looking at mine and mum's ship model. "Just so you know, I beat Sirena, Nixie and Lyla with this - three versus one" I said with a hint of smugness.

The five of us went to the Cavern, Ondina explained the rules that whoever gets the ship to their side of the pool wins, and Evie said it was like a tug of war. I stood next to Sirena for support. Ondina made bubbles in the water to get the ship to her side. The second round Sirena did the same. "It was a fluke!" Ondina whinged. "Best out of three?" Sirena suggested. "You've both won a round isn't that enough?" Evie said. "She still thinks Caitlan and Rita are lousy teachers!" Sirena defended us. "Don't take it personally. It's not your fault they're out of touch!" Ondina smirked. I lifted her up with my powers, and threatened to drop her in the pool, before putting her back on the side of the pool. Terror stricken on her face. "You ready for round three?" I laughed, with Mimi, Sirena and Evie. They started the third round, Ondina brewed a storm, which caught Sirena off guard, but she looked back at me and smiled. I knew exactly what she was going to do. She made lightning which made Ondina fall back in fright, and she pulled the ship towards her. The storm cloud disappeared. "How do we know Caitlan taught you that?" Ondina stubbornly asked getting up, so I made another cloud and made lightning crack even more menacingly. Ondina fell again, and the five of us laughed.

We headed back to the Grotto. "We were never taught lightning. That was brilliant." Mimi praised me and Sirena. Ondina also admitted that me and Mum are very good teachers. "Friends?" Ondina asked, with a smile. An idea hit me. I ran to mine and Mum's chest, that held our Moon Rings, and made two more duplicates of my 'Not Sisters By Blood, Sisters By Heart' bracelets and gave them to Mimi and Ondina. "How about sisters?" I smiled. They both happily put them on, Evie and Sirena showed theirs too. Mimi joked saying that when Ondina fell she was like a turtle on its back, then a beached whale.

Evie tried using her powers again, and she managed to move the canoe. "Looks like you've made a lot of progress!" Mum's voice praised. I didn't even hear her come in. "Sirena's been showing us some of the things you and Cait taught her." Ondina smiled. "We might have passed on some tricks." Mum said proudly and brought me into a hug. "They both showed us the lightning indoors. Would you both teach me?" Ondina asked shyly. "Of course we will" mum smiled.

Evie then showed us her powers moving the canoe. The doorbell rang. "I'll get it" I smiled and went to answer the door. It was Cam. "What you doing here Camilla?" I asked. "Funny. Look, I know I've got more to prove to show that I'm sorry. Especially to Zac, but I was a jerk. You're one of my best friends and I do miss you." Cam then picked up a large amount of seafood, he must have bought it from David's cafe. "This isn't a bribe by the way. I know how much you love seafood." Cam smiled slightly. "It'll take a lot more than buying seafood for me, but you're slowly on the right track. You didn't need to do that Cam" I told him. Cam gave me the seafood. "I'll take that as progress. See ya later fish chick" Cam laughed as he left.

I rolled my eyes and headed back to the Grotto. Zac was there, he must have arrived when I was at the door. "What's this?" Mum asked. "An apology from Cam. He's trying." I smiled. "He misses us Zac, and I know you miss him too. He knows he's got more to prove his apology though." I told Zac, he sighed. "Let's not let it go to waste though." I opened the seafood for us all. We all ate. "Nice bracelets." Zac said to Mimi and Ondina, he knew they matched mine, Sirena and Evie's. "No matter how far across the ocean we are, we'll always be sisters." I said. "I said the same when I gave Sirena, Nixie and Lyla theirs. It's nice to have sisters." The seven of us group hugged. "Was that our first sister fight when you lifted me over the pool with your powers?" Ondina laughed. "I suppose it was. Well you did question mine and mum's abilities." I shrugged. "I've said so many times my little starfish, it's my job to protect you. Not the other way around." Mum whispered. "I'll always protect you, mum. I'll always have all of your backs. That's what family is for." I said proudly.

I got my phone out and said "Wanna see something funny?" I smirked slightly. "What is it?" Sirena asked curiously. "Remember Halloween?" I asked, Zac then said "Oh no" with a massive grin. I showed them all the video of Zac and Cam screaming, the seven of us laughed like crazy. "Hope you're not angry I recorded my powers mum?" I said worried. "Of course not, sweetheart. It's not like anyone goes on your phone. I know you're careful." Mum smiled.

Zac and Evie left, as did Sirena, Ondina and Mimi. So me and mum headed to bed. Poseidon jumped onto the bed and got curled up. Me and mum got cuddled up. "I kinda miss the days when it was just you, me and Poseidon." I said quietly. "Me too baby girl. But it's nice having Zac and the girls round for company. But the best part of my day is getting cuddled up with my not so little girl." Mum chuckled and kissed my head. "Mine too. Goodnight mummy. Love you" I whispered. "Goodnight, darling. I love you too. So so much" mum whispered as we fell asleep.
