Mako Mermaids: Rita Santos' Daughter

Chapter 10

Rita's POV:
Wow, my baby girl is six! I work at the primary school now and Caitlan is an enrolled student. She, Zac and David have made three more friends that are part of their small group: Cam Mitchell, Evie McLaren and Carly Morgan. It's heartwarming to see my Caitlan spend time with other children her age - she knows though that us being  mermaids is a secret and to avoid water.

One thing about mermaids is that we don't get sick. However, since me and Caitlan mix with land dwellers, there's nothing to stop us from becoming sick. And unfortunately for my little girl, we woke up to her vomiting and sneezing - thankfully I brought a bucket in the room last night. "I'm sorry mummy" she sobbed. I gently brought Caitlan into a hug and wiped her tears. "No no sweetheart. You don't need to say sorry. Mummy is going to get one of her magic potions from the Grotto. I'll be two minutes baby." I got out of bed quickly and went downstairs.

Caitlan's POV:
I feel so poop! I don't like it. I can't stop being sick and I sneeze so much! My nose hurts and I can't breathe. Oh no I can feel another sneeze!

I sneezed and the whole room turned to ice. Mummy came rushing in, but she fell and changed to her mermaid self! "No mummy! I'm sorry!" I instantly jumped out of bed to help but slipped and hit my head and I changed into my mermaid self. Ouch!

Rita's POV:
I was as quick as I could to get the potion to help Caitlan feel better and I made a potion for her to drink to help with her cold, when I got back into our room I didn't even get a chance to notice the ice and slid and hurt my ankle, but before I could even process that pain, I transformed and then Caitlan cried and got out of bed to help me, but before I could tell her to stay in bed  so she doesn't get hurt, she slipped and hit her head and transformed too.

I used my powers to melt the ice and dry both myself and Caitlan. As soon as I had my legs back, my ankle really hurt but my main priority was my baby girl sobbing in pain. I lifted my Caitlan up on the bed and got in next to her. I poured some of the potion into a cup and gave it to Caitlan. "I'm going to rub some of this potion on your forehead sweetheart, it might sting slightly but it will help - and drink this, it'll help with the cold." I got some of the potion out and gently rubbed it in, Caitlan whimpered slightly in pain - she drank the potion quickly and cuddled up and fell asleep instantly. I cuddled my little girl as she snoozed away. I rubbed some of the potion on my head to help my ankle pain and I fell asleep too.

A couple hours later, we both woke up. "How you feeling baby?" I asked Caitlan. "My tummy and head still hurts mummy, but I can breathe through my nose again. Oh no - I just remembered I hurt your ankle. Mummy I'm so sorry." I lifted Caitlan onto my knee. "Sweetheart it wasn't your fault. Mermaids don't usually get sick but because we are around land people, we can get poorly too. It just affects us differently. Mummy slipping and hurting her ankle wasn't your fault at all darling. Okay?" I wiped my baby girls tears away and she nodded. "We get tomorrow off from land school as well as today. Did you feel up to any mermaid school today?" I asked Caitlan. "Is it okay if we carry on tomorrow mummy and have a cuddle day to help us feel better?" Caitlan asked with a small pout. "Of course we can sweetheart." I smiled and kissed Caitlan on her head and she snuggled in; I wrapped the blanket over us both. "I love you mummy." She cuddled into my chest. "I love you too darling. Always." I wrapped my arms around her.

Caitlan's POV:
Me and mummy are swimming in the ocean, I'm holding her hand as we swim fast. But mummy let go and swam off. "No mummy! Wait for me. Come back!" I try shouting panicked, I can't swim on my own in the ocean, mummy hasn't taught me how to swim against the current properly. I can feel myself floating down...

Rita's POV:
I jolted awake by Caitlan screaming and sobbing. I didn't even notice that we had our tails. "No mummy. Please don't leave me." Caitlan was crying out in her sleep, she was having a nightmare. I suddenly noticed our tails and why: Caitlan wet the bed, bless her. "Mummy's here sweetheart it's ok." I whispered and Caitlan jumped and woke up shaking, she noticed the puddle underneath us and our tails. "Oops. I'm sorry mummy." Caitlan trembled. "Accidents happen, don't worry Caity. It's ok." I cooed. I then dried us both and cleaned the bed sheets.

We sat on the balcony, Caitlan on my knee. "Wanna talk about that nightmare, sweetheart?" Caitlan looked at me sadly. "We were swimming in the ocean. You let go of my hand and left me and I felt the ocean pull me down." She said quietly and had tears in her eyes. "Oh baby girl, you know that would never happen right?" I reassured her and brought her into my chest, my arms wrapped protectively around her.

Before we work on mermaid school, we decided to have a quick game of Hide and Seek. My ankle is still slightly sore, but it's better. Caitlan is hiding first. "...seventeen, eighteen, nineteen, twenty! Okay little Miss Santos - ready or not, here I come!" I went into the living room, and I heard something move on the sofa, but there was nothing there. I went round the sofa and as I walked, I used Invisibility Detection and I saw Caitlan with a big grin on her face on the sofa. "No fair Mummy! You cheated!" She giggled and became visible again. "Oi missy, so did you! You're getting so much better with your mermaid powers sweetheart." I sat next to Caitlan and tickled her sides. "Mummy stop!" She giggled. "You're doing so well, I think you'll be ahead like I was. I mean I know you don't attend mermaid school with other hatchlings, but I know you're getting the hang of using your powers. Well done darling" I smiled. "Thanks mummy. Now it's your turn to hide." Caitlan replied. "Kiss first?" I puckered my lips and Caitlan wrapped her arms around me and gave me a kiss. "Go hide mummy!" She giggled and started counting.

I hid on the roof and used the Invisibility Spell to hide myself. A few minutes later, I saw Caitlan come out and she used the Invisibility Detection and looked right at me. "Found you mummy!" She smiled and I crouched down and opened my arms, and Caitlan ran into them, I scooped her up. "Technically we've done some mermaid work already, but wanna head to the pool and do some more?" I asked and Caitlan nodded.

We jumped into the pool and transformed. "So we've already mastered Hydrokinesis, which is?" I asked and Caitlan recited "The ability to create, control, and manipulate liquid water." I smiled and said "that's right sweetheart. Shall we?" Together, we formed two balls of water floating. "And with one small flick of the wrist, we can make something magical. Ready?" I asked and we both flicked our wrists, and the water balls turned into fireworks. Caitlan gasped in awe "wow."

Veridia then appeared, Caitlan shyly cuddled into my arms. "Wow, I always knew she'd be a chip off the old block, in a few years she'll probably be ready for her moon ring. You don't have to be scared of Aunty Veridia sweetheart." Caitlan looked at me confused, then laid her head in the crook of my neck. "Veridia, why are you here?" I asked - although I already had a feeling. "Please come back to the pod Rita. Caitlan is the first of our kind to have been born, not hatched and she's phenomenal with her powers, just like you were as a hatchling. She needs-" I then cut her off, "No. it's not up to you what my daughter needs. It's my choice. We won't be coming back to the pod. Our lives are here." I wrapped my arms around Caitlan protectively. Veridia angrily swam off. "Are you okay darling?" I asked Caitlan, she nodded then asked "who was that mummy?" I told her everything: about when I was a hatchling with Veridia and how I broke the mermaid rules of using the Legs spell when I fell in love with Harry, so Veridia banished me and after he died, I discovered I was pregnant. Veridia tried a couple other times to persuade me to return to the pod but I refused. "And I wouldn't have changed a single moment sweetheart, because if I hadn't fallen in love with your daddy, I wouldn't be your mummy. And I'm the luckiest mummy ever because you're my baby girl." I kissed Caitlan's nose and she scrunched her face adorably. "how about we get cuddled up on the sofa, watch some television and treat ourselves to some seaweed cordial?" I suggested and Caitlan nodded.

We got all wrapped up and snuggled on the sofa, enjoying some seaweed cordial and ironically we decided on watching The Little Mermaid. We're making the most of today before back to land school tomorrow.
