Chapter 28

Caitlan's POV:

Lyla, Nixie and Sirena are trying to work out how to deal with Zac on the Full Moon tonight. Nixie thinks that if they keep Zac out the moonlight, he'll lose his powers. "Rita, Caitlan? You tell them it'll work!" Nixie said to us. I looked at mum unsure. "I don't know. We've not had any experience with any merman, nobody in the pod has. But it could work I suppose." Mum shrugged. I got a text off Evie, saying she wanted to talk. "Mum am I ok to quickly pop see Evie?" I asked, mum smiled and nodded.

I went to the cafe, Evie and Carly were waiting for me. "We're sorry how we treated you at the pool party. We never should have taken it out on you." Evie said ruefully, Carly nodded. I smiled and hugged them.

I bought some lobster from the cafe before heading home. I put the lobster in the fridge. "What's this?" Mum asked. "I thought I'd treat us to some lobster, small treat for the Full Moon tonight" I smiled and mum brought me into a hug.

There was a knock at the door, me and mum answered. It was Zac. "Hey Cait, Miss Santos. Are your nieces in?" Zac asked mum. "Umm-" mum started but Lyla, Nixie and Sirena appeared behind us. Zac smiled and headed to the roof with the three of them.

Me and mum headed to The Grotto. "Well that's a first" I laughed. "It's only because they saw his tail and obviously he doesn't know that we know or that we have tails too" mum said putting her arm around me. "I know mum, it's not bothered me that he's not told me because to be fair I've kept our tails that we were born with a secret." I smiled and rested my head on her shoulder.

The girls came in, Lyla beaming a big smile. "We're spending the night at Zac's, making sure he isn't exposed to the moonlight" she said. "We all know how strong the force of the Full Moon is. Be careful" I warned them before they left. "Caitlan, sweetheart I want you to promise me something" mum said worried. "Anything mum" I smiled. "I know Zac doesn't know that we know, or that we are mermaids - but promise that you won't get involved? I know you two are like brother and sister, but you are my baby girl. My only daughter and I don't want you in any danger." Mum asked concerned and worried. "I promise mum" I smiled and mum put her hands to my face and kissed my nose. I scrunched my face into a smile. "You might be sixteen, Little Miss Santos but you're never too old for nose kisses off your mummy" mum laughed. I really am still a baby in her eyes.

During the Full Moon, me and mum got cuddled up in the Grotto, looking through our photo albums and memories and eating lobster. Poseidon snuggled up with us and had some lobster as well.

The next morning, the girls went to see Zac and came back to the Grotto. They told us that he's even stronger - he can make himself invisible; and he went to Mako. Mum said she feared this, Zac could end up with powers stronger than all of us. Zac wouldn't use his powers against us...would he?

It's a few days later, and we have a Calculus exam today. I mean I always get top grades - but I'm in the Grotto studying my butt off. "Caitlan darling, you always get top grades. You don't need to stress." I heard mum. I looked up and mum had a cup of tea for me. I put down my study books and had breakfast with mum before we headed to school.

In mum's office, mum put the exam papers on her desk before we headed to the toilets. I can use the staff ones, only when mum is about, which is reasonable.

On our way back, Cam was at mum's door. "Hold it!" Mum scolded. Cam said he was looking for Zac. "Why would Zac be in my office?" Mum scoffed. "I don't know" Cam shrugged, mum told him to go study which he did.

I looked at mum, she tried the door which was locked still. We went in. I 'tripped' and fell and knocked some stuff off mum's desk. "Ouch. Sorry mum." I feigned panic. Mum bent down to my level and used the Invisibility Detection Spell, we saw Zac out the corner of our eyes. Mum helped me up. "Are you ok?" She asked and I nodded. "I'm gonna head to the others, see you in the exam mum" I smiled and gave mum a hug.

I met up with Evie, Carly and Cam. "Where's David?" I asked, Carly shrugged. Evie was stressing about the exam. I got my book out and continued to study. Zac came and was talking incognito to Evie - he definitely cheated, why else was he in mum's office?

It's exam time! Breathe Cait. I took my seat and mum was at the desk. "You have one hour! Turn over your papers" she smiled. I looked at the questions. We haven't learnt any of this. I glanced up at mum, she looked smug. She must have changed the questions to next year's syllabus level. Very smart, mama. I smiled slightly at mum.

At the end of the day, I was walking with mum. "Rita Santos, you are brilliant" I whispered linking my arm with hers. "It's Mama Santos to you" she whispered back and we laughed. David then ran upto us, apologising and asking if he can sit the exam. Mum said our entire class will be next week due to the exam being from next year's syllabus.

On the way home, mum told me that Lyla persuaded Sirena to sing the Enchantment song on Zac, but it backfired and made David infatuated with Nixie. I just laughed.

We got to the Grotto, the girls gave us a new shell as they accidentally broke the other. "You know a lot about the Enchantment Song" Lyla pointed out to mum. "Yeah, your land dweller boyfriend! Did you-?" Nixie started. "Did I ever sing it to him?" Mum laughed. "Of course not! Love means the same on the land as it does at sea. You can't cheat it. Like exams" mum added - I laughed. "We also got you this" Nixie handed mum a bag full of lobsters. "Will you tell us some land stories Rita?" Sirena asked. Mum smiled and said "I'd love to!" - we all sat down and indulged in the lobster. "What would you like to know first?" Mum asked. "Could you tell us about what you meant that time you said you were pregnant with Caitlan?" Lyla asked eagerly. I smirked as mum basically gave the girls 'the talk' - they were just as grossed out as they were in Biology Class last month. "I know it sounds disgusting, but it's a beautiful thing. I wouldn't have my Caitlan if it didn't happen with Harry" mum smiled and held my hand. "The first time I found out about how land dwellers procreate, I had the exact reaction. Don't worry girls" mum laughed. "But feeling Caitlan grow inside me, really was an incredible feeling. And holding her for the first time? I knew how lucky I was" mum smiled at me. "I'm the lucky one mummy" I felt myself tear up.

"What are those?" Nixie asked pointing at mine and mum's hand and foot prints over the years. "On my birthday each year, me and mum make handprints and footprints. It's a tradition we do." I smiled.

We showed the girls the photo album that mum made when I was born, they really were fascinated by the pregnant photos of mum.

I started to sing 'Shine Your Light' - I don't know why I felt like singing. Sirena gasped. "You sing too? I didn't know you knew that song! I always sing it with my sister Aquata" she said excitedly and joined in with me.

Funnily enough, I'm really enjoying Sirena, Lyla and Nixie being around!
