Mako Mermaids: Rita Santos' Daughter

Chapter 39

Caitlan's POV:

It's been a couple of months since the mermaids returned to the pod. My phone rang, it was Evie. "Hey, everything ok?" I answered. "Yeah. Wanna help me in the shop for a bit this morning?" Evie replied. "Sure. Won't be long" I hung up and headed to the cafe.

There was a new waiter behind the counter next to David. "Hey David!" I smiled. "Hey Cait, Evie said you were helping her today. Your watermelon juice is already waiting for you. Oh this is Erik, he started this morning" David said. "Nice to meet you" Erik smiled and held his hand out, which I shook. "Likewise" I replied.

"You know how I want to have my own fashion label?" Evie asked. "Yeah" I said confused. "Well I was thinking, what if you joined me? You could have your own jewellery line" Evie suggested. "I'll have to think about it, and talk about it to mum. I don't really want to leave the Gold Coast as I wanna stay with mum. But I'm sure we can figure something out" I smiled.

When I got home, I went to the Grotto. I heard screams and a familiar voice say "Hey Poseidon, I've missed you" - Sirena. Before entering the Grotto, I turned myself invisible. I snuck in and made myself visible then said "Oi what about me?" Sirena and two new girls who I assume are from the pod, screamed. Sirena laughed and hugged me "of course I've missed you and Rita!" The two new mermaids were on the floor. I held my hands out for them to get up. Sirena went to see mum. "I'm Caitlan, by the way" I smiled. "I'm Ondina, this is Mimi" Ondina replied. I don't know why but there's something about Mimi that's so familiar.

Sirena took the girls to the cafe, I went to sit with mum for a bit. I told her about Evie's idea. "I think it's a great idea, darling! Your jewellery making is phenomenal. And you can do it all from here, I'm sure we'd find a way for you to collaborate with Evie" mum smiled and brought me into a hug.

Zac and Evie came by, asking what Mimi and Ondina meant by the 'Seventh Moon Cycle'. Mum told them that there are legends that a certain phase of the Full Moon cycle can escalate a merman's powers. Evie made Zac promise not to go to Mako tonight on the Full Moon.

Me and mum headed to the Grotto, Poseidon came up to us. "What is it Poseidon?" Mum asked. We went inside the Grotto. Me and mum checked her potion ingredients instantly. "There's ingredients to make the Fifty Full Moons potion missing" I pointed out. "I've taught you well, sweetheart" mum smiled. I had a vision of Mako and the Full Moon. "Zac" I said in realisation. "Go" mum encouraged me.

I swam to Mako as fast as I could and entered the Moon Pool. Mimi and Ondina started the spell on Zac. "What are you doing here?" Ondina asked. "I could ask you the same question. Wonder where you got the ingredients for this spell?" I sarcastically replied. "Zac you ok?" I shouted. "Cait get me out of here!" He yelled. Evie then showed up and trapped in the spell with Zac. There was a large flash and Evie went unconscious. She woke up and she was ok thankfully.

I went home and told mum about what happened. She told me that Evie will most likely become a mermaid.

The next morning, I met up with Zac and Evie at the marina. Evie wet her hand to prove to us that she isn't a mermaid. But then she fell in the water with a tail. I saw Sirena, Ondina and Mimi watching from a distance.

I was sat in the Grotto, relaxing - mum had to pop out. Sirena, Ondina and Mimi came in and started using mine and mum's stuff. "Ummm can I help you?" I rhetorically asked Ondina and Mimi. "We're trying to fix your friend. Mimi can do things you can't even imagine" Ondina said as Mimi made some pink gloop. "Imagine this apple is Evie" Mimi said as she turned the apple into a banana and reversed the spell. "Northern Pod mermaids know the best spells" Ondina said. "Northern Pod? Aren't they supposed to be dangerous?" Sirena asked worried. "We can be" Mimi smiled. "You're the daughter of Nerissa!" I blurted out and caught Mimi off guard. "How do you know?" Mimi asked shocked. "The stories of your mum are legendary. And as amazing your mum was, my mum is phenomenal too." I smiled. I saw Ondina roll her eyes. "Do you have a problem with my mum?" I got defensive and Ondina shook her head. "No" she scoffed. "Good. Me and mum may not be part of the Mako Pod, but you've no idea what we're capable of" I threatened. As Mimi carried on with the spell, Ondina smirked "You can't be that good if you haven't got your Moon Ring" Sirena then proudly said "Actually, Caitlan is one of the best teachers. She taught me, Lyla and Nixie" I smiled and brought her into a hug. Ondina scoffed again. "I'm guessing you graduated Mermaid School and got your Moon Ring at sixteen? I was twelve" I smirked and Ondina's face dropped.

I left the Grotto and went to the living room. Mum was back, Sirena joined us and told us about Mimi and Ondina.

Anyway, that night I fancied a small swim. I went to the Moon Pool and Evie was there with Sirena, Ondina and Mimi. "Looks like someone's a mermaid a wee bit longer" I smiled. "I'm slowly getting used to it" Evie replied. "There's no way you got your Moon Ring at twelve. You were raised on land" Ondina remarked. "Sounds like a challenge to me Cait." Sirena smiled. Ondina made a water ball and launched it at me, I turned it into fireworks which startled her. "That's just a smidge of what I can do." I smirked and left the Moon Pool and headed home.
