Chapter 43

Caitlan's POV:

I had a bit of an early start, mum was still asleep when I woke up so I went for a swim and gathered a few ingredients to make a potion, one of my own creations.

I made the potion and put it away, then went to make breakfast for me and mum. "You're up rather early." Mum yawned as she sat on the balcony with me and we ate. "I couldn't sleep, so went for a swim and gathered some ingredients and made a potion." I smiled. "What type of potion?" Mum asked curiously, "if we need to use it, I'll tell you." I laughed.

Ondina had a meeting with the mermaid council, mum had a lesson teaching Mimi and Sirena so I laid in the pool for a bit.

I heard a loud bang so I got dry and ran into the Grotto - it was full of smoke. "As far as lessons go, that was pretty much a waste of time" mum coughed. Mimi said she was too worried about Ondina, as was Sirena and that they're worrying in case the mermaid council will make them return. "There were always going to be consequences to your decision of running away" mum told them. Mimi then mentioned about Evie and Erik and that Ondina may not have told them. "It would be most unwise to lie to the mermaid council" I said. I then noticed mum and Mimi had small cuts and burns on their arms. I grabbed the potion I made this morning. "What's this?" Mimi asked curiously. "A potion I created, put a small bit on your cut and burn" I smiled. Both mum and Mimi applied it and within a minute, they healed. "So that's what you were up to this morning?" Mum smiled slightly and I nodded. "It smells lovely! What's in it?" Sirena asked. "Now that would be telling. I'm kidding. Fresh seaweed, soft coral, sea slime, seahorse powder, dolphin saliva and a small hint of sea lavender." I told them. "This is really good, well done sweetheart" mum brought me into a hug. "Would you teach us how to make it?" Mimi asked, Sirena was also intrigued. "Of course I will." I replied. Mum told them what ingredients they needed for the next lesson later.

Mum popped out to see Uncle Max, I dozed off in the Grotto and didn't even hear Ondina come back. It wasn't until I woke up to see a young girl watching me. I jolted up. "You live here?" She asked, I woke up properly and saw Sirena, Ondina and Mimi watching. "Hatchling?" I asked them. "Hi! I'm Neppy!" Neppy extended her hand and I shook it. "Yes, I'm Caitlan. This is mine and my mum's home. Veridia sent you back with a hatchling?" I questioned Ondina. "No!" Ondina defended. "I'm going to help get rid of the merman's powers so the pod can come home!" Neppy said happily. "You shouldn't be away from the pod Neppy." I said soft but sternly. "I'm off out for a bit, see you later" I said to Sirena, Mimi and Ondina.

I went for a swim and went to Uncle Max's shop. As soon as I walked to the desk, he appeared. "Oh it's just you Cait" he sighed. "Nice to see you too, Uncle Max" I laughed and followed him into the library. Mum was helping Lily, Ruksy, Imogen and Darra with their studies. "We've got a visitor" Max said. "Hey sweetheart, everything ok?" Mum asked. "Yeah. A hatchling followed Ondina home. And I wanted to pop over" I shrugged.

Imogen was giggling, I knew she was about to pull a prank. I raised my hand and stopped the water that was about to fall on me and used my powers that flung it on Imogen. "Not bad for a mermaid" she said impressed and we all laughed.

A few minutes later, we heard the shop door - before Max could even leave the Library, Zac ran in. "Cait. We need your help. Ondina upset Neppy and she ran away." Zac said panting. "Let's go" I said panicked. "I'll head home in case she shows up" mum said.

Me and Zac swum to the pier near the cafe, we saw Neppy hiding behind the jetty, and three boys were in the water approaching her. Me and Zac looked at each other than swam near the boys, who thought we were sharks and left the water. Neppy tried to get Zac away but she calmed when she saw me. "Neppy, a few months ago, I ran away. My loved ones were as scared as a puffer fish. Let's get you back" I said softly and the three of us swam home.
