Mako Mermaids: Rita Santos' Daughter

Chapter 25

Caitlan's POV:

Back to school today! I'm still mum's junior assistant, I leave each class ten minutes early (as a Straight A Student I always finish my work) so I can see if Mum needs anything doing.

First up is Biology. I leave my things in mum's office instead of the locker hall. I gave mum a hug before heading to class. "Have fun sweetheart." She gave me a kiss before sitting down. I smiled at her and met with Evie, Zac, Cam, David and Carly.

I went to the locker room. "Hey" I smiled and hugged Evie and Carly. I noticed David talking to someone I've never seen before, there were two other girls with her. "Those who you were talking about?" I whispered to Evie and she nodded.

I sat next to Carly in front of the three new girls in class. Our teacher showed us a model of the human anatomy, whilst describing he dropped everything. "You should have just got a game of Operation to demonstrate, sir!" I said out loud, "I think you've spent too much time with Cam" Zac said and we all laughed - well apart from the three at the back. I saw mum walk past and she stopped and looked at the new girls, she saw me and smiled which I returned.

We had a diagram to complete which I completed easily. I got up, gave it to the teacher and headed to mum. I got a glimpse of the new girls, they just looked at the diagrams confusingly.

I went to mum's office, she was at her desk. "Hey mum" I smiled. "Hey darling, who were those girls?" She asked. "I've no clue, all I know is they've been asking about Zac." I shrugged. "I've just checked the registers and they're not registered. I think they're mermaids" mum said. "The only other born mermaid I know is Veridia, I don't know any my age. But yeah they could be." I said.

We had our seafood lunch and then went for a little walk. Those girls were stood not far from the fountain, next thing we know the water is erratically shooting upwards. Mum shielded me but neither of us got wet.

Uh oh. Mum doesn't look happy. She stormed over to the three girls, I followed behind. "The three of you in my office now. We need to have a little talk." She said sternly. Mum linked her arm with mine and we walked to the office.

Mum opened the door and I sat on one of the seats behind her desk, mum sat next to me - being the Principal's daughter does have its perks! The three girls stood awkwardly in front of us. "I'm Principal Santos, this is my daughter and junior assistant, Caitlan. I want to know what you're doing in my school grounds." Mum ordered. "We were eating lunch." The tall blonde one said. "No you weren't. I was watching you. You were in Biology too, but you're not registered." Mum replied. "That's why we're here, to see if we wanted to register." The dark haired one stated. "What about your parents? Where are they?" I asked. "They're coming later" the tall blonde one replied again. I checked the time, I needed to head to English. "Mum I've-" I whispered and she nodded.

English was fun, we read some poetry. Anyway, I met mum outside the class; she brought my bag, it's the end of the day. Mum linked her arm with mine and we walked home, she told me that those girls are definitely mermaids and one had a moon ring which she took off her.

We got home and went for a swim. Me and mum enjoy having small races around the reef. When we got back in the cavern, the three girls were stood there. They followed us home. "Nice...tails" the tall blonde one smirked.

We got dry and the girls said they were called Sirena, Lyla and Nixie. They followed us into the living room. I sat on the chair and mum looked out the window. "What are you doing here living on land?" Nixie asked. "It's a long story" Mum said quietly. "We've got plenty of time" Lyla remarked. "And we're not going anywhere until you tell us" Sirena said smugly. "Watch your tone!" I scolded and Poseidon jumped on the chair, the girls screamed and I smiled slightly. "What pod are you from?" Mum asked and stood next to me, holding me protectively. "Mako" Lyla replied. "Why aren't you with your pod?" I asked. "We were cast out" Lyla said. I looked sympathetic for them, as did mum. "We let a boy from your school fall in the Moon Pool. Zac" Nixie revealed. "Zac Blakely? He's got powers now?!" Mum got angry. I zoned out and started stroking Poseidon. My blood brother has a tail? Why didn't he tell me? To be honest, I've not told him about the tail I was born with so I guess we're even.

I zoned back in and mum gave Sirena her moon ring back. Apparently we're helping them take Zac's powers....

Anyway, it's the next morning. I'm sat on the balcony next to mum. Poseidon comes running out. "Hey Poseidon! What is it?" Mum asked. Poseidon ran back in. "Something's wrong" I said quietly. Mum barged inside and I followed her inside.

"Somebody already knows Rita and Caitlan's secret" I heard as I ran into the Grotto. Lyla was holding the edited photo of  me, mum and dad. Nixie and Sirena were looking at some of our things from the sea. "Put that down! This place is private. These things aren't for you!" Mum angrily took the photo and objects off the girls. Lyla started scolding mum that she gets to tell whoever she likes about being a mermaid. "I told him because he was going to be my husband!" Mum said with her eyes full of tears, and then said she wanted them gone by the time the sun sets.

After the girls left, I sat next to Mum. "I was going to go shopping with Evie today. But I'll cancel mum" I held her hand. "No sweetheart. I don't want you to cancel your plans for me." Mum wiped her tears. "Too late" I smiled. I called Evie. "Hey Evester, mum is feeling abit down today. We good to reschedule?" I asked. "Definitely. I'm still going to our favourite shoe shop though, it's having a sale" Evie said and put the phone down.

Me and mum spent the day in the Grotto, mainly cuddled up with Poseidon and looking at our photo. Sirena, Lyla and Nixie came back and apologised, and that they'd leave. "Did you marry him?" Sirena asked. "No. He died. And then I found out I was pregnant with our Caitlan." I looked at mum and wiped her tears; she then said that they can stay and both me and mum will help them. "If anyone asks, tell them you're my nieces, that makes me your aunt and Caitlan your cousin" Sirena pulled us into a hug. Lyla also said that Evie would call the cops on them if they don't pay properly. "Hey Aunt Rita! Do you have any money?" Nixie asked, we all laughed.

Nixie also told me she got her and Evie banned from the shoe shop. I went in and spoke to the owner. "Remember last year, when Miriam Kent tried to steal from you and put the blame on me? And you said you would do anything to stop me from telling the papers?" I asked the owner and she shrewdly looked down on her nose. "Yes" she said coldly. "Lift the ban on the two girls from yesterday" I smiled slightly. "Fine! Both girls are no longer banned" it looked painful for her.

I went to see Evie at the Cafe. "Hey, you're no longer banned from our favourite shoe shop!" I smiled and Evie brought me into a hug. "Oh here's the money for Sirena and Nixie's clothes" I gave her the money and she was confused. "It turns out they're my cousins, my mum's cousin's daughters. Mum never really talked about her family so I didn't know who they were when they arrived" I smiled before heading home.

In the Grotto, mum was sitting with the girls. "I've paid for your clothes and you're no longer banned from the shoe shop" I smiled and joined them. "Wow, you're good" Nixie said in awe. "What did you mean last night when you said you were pregnant?" Sirena asked. Mum laughed. "Thats a biology lesson for another day. All I'll say is, my baby girl wasn't hatched like we were. She was born" mum smiled and brought me into a hug.

Looks like our family has just got slightly bigger!
