Chapter 31

Caitlan's POV:

It's the next full moon tonight ... great. The girls are discussing how to deal with Zac. "We keep him out of the moonlight. If he's hit with the moon spell, he'll head straight for Mako and the trident." Lyla said. "You can't let that happen" me and mum said simultaneously. We looked at each other, smiling and said "Jinx" - "Can we focus?" Nixie ordered, with a small smile. "I'm sick of being a babysitter for a land boy. I say we let him take the trident" Nixie said. "You can't be serious?" I said in shock. I felt a bit dizzy, and lost my balance and fell. "Sweetheart are you ok?" Mum asked panicked. "Just feel a bit dizzy and light headed." I said a bit shaky. "Come on, let's get you laid down in bed for the day" mum helped me up and took me to bed. "I'll do you a cup of tea, my little starfish. That might help" she wrapped me up and kissed my head. Poseidon then cuddled up to me.

After my cup of tea, I fell asleep instantly. I heard mum come in every now and then to check on me, but I stayed in bed all day.

The next morning I went to the Grotto. The girls were a shaken mess. "What happened?" I asked. "Zac went to Mako and got the trident, we followed him in and he saw us with our tails. He doesn't trust us" Lyla said tearfully. Uh oh...

After school, Sirena suggested they use their powers to deal with Zac. "How far along are you in your training?" Mum asked. "We've not done any since we were kicked out of the pod. Oooh you two can teach us!" Sirena said excited. Me and mum looked at each other and said we could help them master their powers. Nixie wasn't up for it. Lyla wanted to be ready for when the pod returns. "Sorry Nixie, looks like you've been outvoted." Mum smiled. "Give me three good reasons why I should agree" Nixie said smugly. "Your pod" me and mum said together. "Aquata" Sirena said. "Zac" said Lyla. "Us" Sirena added. "That was four reasons" Nixie sighed.

Mum asked the girls that instead of making ourselves invisible how else could we stop sailors from seeing us. Nixie put her hand up. "We drown them" - "That was dark" I laughed slightly. Mum then showed the three of them how to conjure a storm. "Wow a storm in a bottle" Nixie remarked sarcastically. "Let me try!" Sirena said happily.

At school, we had a meeting with the Blakely's to discuss Zac's grades. "Are you sure you're alright with me sitting in the meeting?" I asked Doctor and Mrs Blakely. "Of course it's alright! You are your mother's assistant after all" Mrs Blakely smiled.

Anna came in with some tea, but she's rather clumsy. She spilled some on the desk which made me and mum slightly weary. Mum was suggesting on ways why Zac could be low on his grades. "It might be an administrative error, these things happen right Miss Santos?" Zac smugly asked, me and mum looked out the corner of our eyes and saw the spilled tea puddle moving towards us. Zac knows! Mum put her hand on my knee in shock, I held her hand. Zac was still moving the puddle. Me and mum got up in fright. "I suppose it could be an error" mum trembled. The Blakely's left the office. Both me and mum broke down in tears, we engulfed each other in a hug, before mum took my hand and we raced home.

Mum was telling the girls what happened, and that we have to leave due to Zac blowing our cover. I got a text off Zac: Mako

I sighed. "Mum I'll help you with the packing soon" and I ran out, as the girls tried persuading mum to stay.

On my swim to Mako, the sharks and dolphins knew something was wrong so they stayed close for my sake. Zac was waiting for me near the shore, I've actually never walked on Mako. "Why didn't you tell me you was a mermaid? I'd have kept it a secret" Zac said hurt. "Really? After blackmailing me and mum back at school, how long did it take for you to tell Cam?" I snapped. Zac turned red. "Exactly. And you didn't tell me about your tail either. Thanks to your stunt Zac, me and mum have to now leave!" I saw Zac tear up slightly. "W-what?" I angrily left Mako, the sharks and dolphins surrounded me whilst I turned invisible and swam home.

I got back, and mum was packing like crazy. I broke down in tears and gave her a hug. Mum then broke down in tears again and we just sat in the Grotto, cuddled up most of the afternoon.

The next morning, Zac texted that he wanted to talk to me and mum at school. In mum's office he apologised for yesterday, and that his grades need picking up. "So, we good?" Mum asked him. "Yeah, we're good. Do I have my sis back?" He asked, I saw a tear slightly. "You never lost me bro!" I laughed and he brought me into a hug. Anna came in and asked if we wanted tea. "No!" The three of us said panicked.

Back at home, the girls gave us a gift. "You already gave me the opportunity to still be able to teach. And me and Caitlan don't have to go anywhere. Thanks to you three" mum smiled. "You're worth it. Both of you" Sirena smiled. Mum opened the gift. It was the photo me and the girls took in the Photo Booth a while ago. "We noticed that land people like to show off photos of their relatives, so this is so people think that we are your nieces and cousins" Sirena smiled. "Well we are, sort of" Nixie said happily. "Well first thing tomorrow, we expect you to be ready to train. Especially you Nixie, our star student. We heard you conjured quite a storm when you confronted Zac" I smiled. "You're a great teacher" Nixie brought me into a hug. "Must be a Santos thing" I winked at mum.

The five of us sat down, looking at the photo. "Do you like it?" Sirena asked. "We love it" Mum replied. "Why don't the five of us go to the Photo Booth and do one together to put in the frame with this one?" I suggested. "Ooooh yesss!" Sirena got excited.

We went to the Photo Booth, we took two photos of us all grouped up, we blew a kiss to the camera, and then we all stuck our tongues out. The photo went instantly in the frame with the other.

When we got back, mum put the frame on the side, next to other photos of me and her over the years (non-mermaid pictures). It's actually quite nice having the girls here, I mean I do miss it when it was just me and mum, but having other mermaids my age? I'm loving it!
