Caitlan's POV:

Me and mum went to the Grotto to see Nixie with her tail. "What are you doing? You're supposed to be practicing" mum said. "If you want to graduate mermaid school, you have to take this seriously" I pointed out.

Mum graded Sirena and Lyla's levitation skills. Nixie had gone out. Sirena passed with flying colours, Lyla however needed improvement, she shows off a wee bit much and doesn't show enough control.

"You off to the cafe today sweetheart?" Mum asked. "Nah, I might do some painting" I replied. "Mind if I join you?" Mum smiled. "You really need to ask?" I poked my tongue out. Mum laughed and tickled my sides.

We got the paints and a canvas each, and sat on the balcony. My phone rang. "Hey Zac" I smiled and put him on speaker. "Cait, can you help us find Cam's phone? He filmed me in the pool, and he's lost it in the cafe" Zac said. "It was Nixie's fault!" Cam said in the background. "I would, but Mum wants me to help her clean up today. Keep me updated." I said and Zac hung up. Mum started laughing. "I thought I raised you to not tell lies?" Mum pointed out. "Yeah, but I lied so I can spend the day with my amazing mum" I shrugged. "Sweet talk, huh?" Mum smiled. "Did it work?" I asked. Me and mum burst with laughter.

Mum painted the beach, I painted the underwater world: reefs, sea creatures and the beautiful blue sea. "That's gorgeous" mum said in awe. "As is yours mum" I smiled. Mum hung up our paintings above the television.

The next morning, Zac called. "Hey, is everything sorted?" I asked. "Yeah, Nixie blew up Cam's phone and poured a smoothie on him. It was rather funny" he told me, ha! Brilliant. Zac then sent me a photo of Cam, covered in pink smoothie. "We need to get that photo printed" I joked and me and Zac laughed.

Me and mum got cuddled up in the Grotto. "Let's hope the girls and Zac will be more responsible with their powers." I sighed. "Did I ever have any slip ups when I was younger?" I asked mum. "No actually. You were really responsible and careful, even when you were a hatchling. Never broke any rules I gave you." Mum smiled and kissed the top of my head.

Today's mermaid class involved the ability to control water in any form, that water is the spirit of our essence. Sirena wanted to learn some Moon Ring stuff, but both me and mum said they're not ready. "But Caitlan got hers when she was twelve!" Lyla argued. "Caitlan worked extremely hard and showed great responsibility to earn it" mum said proudly. "And even though I got mine, I decided to not wear it. As mum doesn't wear or use hers." I smiled and held mum's hand.

Me and mum went to the Blakely's for lunch. Evie and Cam were there. "And we've got more guests joining us for lunch" Mrs Blakely said happily. Lyla, Nixie and Sirena joined us. I have a feeling something is gonna go tails up...

"Why are you here?" Mum asked. "On her finger!" Lyla said, indicating to Evie - she's wearing a Moon Ring. "Where did she get it?" I asked in shock. "Take a guess" Nixie said, looking at Zac.

We sat down for lunch, I sat next to Mum at the bottom of the table. "Are you and Caitlan alright with seafood Principal Santos?" Doctor Blakely asked. "It's our favourite!" Mum smiled.

Doctor and Mrs Blakely said that the reason for the lunch is that they want to donate the necessary funds for the new art room at school, which is very generous of them.

Zac then told his mum to look at Evie's ring, which she did. She said it was beautiful, and said it's similar to Sirena's. I kinda zoned out, until Cam 'accidentally' spilled the drinks, which caused me, mum, Lyla, Sirena, Zac and Nixie to jump up startled.

Lyla used her magic to fling the ring into the herb garden, her and Zac then went to find it. I rolled my eyes and sat down. Evie then offered bread rolls to me and mum.

Zac said he had to check some trials on his computer, Lyla offered to help, as did Sirena. Lyla then grabbed my arm - looks like I've no choice!

In Zac's room, I just sat on the couch. Zac was going to hide the ring, but we intervened. Sirena tried grabbing the ring, but Zac moved. "You have to move faster than that to get me!" He laughed. "Zac, why not give the ring to me? At least you know it'll be safe." I suggested. "Cait, I trust you. You know that. It's them I don't trust" Zac said. Lyla and Sirena used their powers, Zac's trophies and its display fell over. "Zac just give us the ring!" Lyla snapped. "What, this ring?" He smugly waved the ring, they tried to use their powers again, which set the ring's magic off and the door opened, the magic struck mum and paralysed her. Lyla snatched the ring off Zac. "Mum!" I said panicked. Evie then started knocking on the door. Sirena then remembered about what mum said about water being the spirit of our essence. Zac poured some of his bottled water on mum, which just transformed her. "She was born in the sea! She needs seawater" Sirena said. Zac texted Cam.

We then carried mum to the jetty and dropped her in the water, I jumped in after her. Thankfully she woke up instantly. She put her hands to my face and smiled, we swam to somewhere we could get dry and then finish lunch with the Blakely's.

That night, Nixie was levitating a cube of ice and Lyla had the Moon Ring on, saying how amazing it is that it feels natural. "Not for long" I said. "Why can't I keep it?" Lyla asked taken aback. "Not after what happened today! It's just as I said, you're not ready for Moon Rings" Mum scolded slightly. Lyla was twiddling with the ring. "She's right guys, the power of water is way more important!" Nixie said, the ice falling. "No!" Mum yelled. I shoved mum out the way and I got paralysed by the magic.

Rita's POV:

"Moon Ring! Now Lyla" I said sternly. Lyla sighed and took it off and handed me the ring. I put it away with the other two. I then went to the pool and made a water ball, taking it to Caitlan. I dropped it and Caitlan woke up, with her tail. "You shouldn't have shoved me out the way. Are you okay?" I asked Cait with tears in my eyes. Caitlan dried herself and nodded. I brought her into a protective hug. "You really need to start being more responsible with your powers, or you'll never earn your Moon Rings." Caitlan said to the girls, but then we all just burst out laughing.
