Sunghoon didn't hear anyone calling his name until Jay was elbowing his side, pulling his gaze towards him only to nod ahead to redirect Sunghoon's eyes. As he looked to the side, Sunghoon found his parents standing in the now quiet circle.
Instantly growing tense, Sunghoon swallowed and stuttered, "I-I didn't know you were coming to the game today. I-"
"We wanted to check on you." Sungwoo began, voice firm but not as firm as it wanted to be. Sunghoon could tell he was holding back because all of his friends surrounded them. "As you are not answering your messages."
With that, everyone turned towards Sunghoon, trying their best to remain subtle as the once carefree joy from winning the game turned into awkward tension.
Sunghoon clenched his jaw, feeling too many eyes on him as he lied, "O-oh, uhh, yeah my- My phone broke during the trip."
His Appa's eyes traced his entire face before he simply hummed, clearly not wanting to get into things with his friends present.
"Did you all have fun?" Sungwoo then asked, letting his eyes trace the entire group.
It was hesitant, no one knowing if they should speak or not, but Dae braved the tension first, smiling, "We had a lovely time. We even won the cheer competition!"
"That's wonderful, Dae." Sungwoo praised, a genuine smile covering his face.
"Well done. All of you." Misun continued, eyes flickering over both Jake and Sunoo as well.
Sunghoon watched with increasing levels of discomfort. Until finally his Eomma began to say something to them again and he was interrupting, "Y-you guys should probably get going, it's a long drive home."
Both of his parents gave him a look - a look that could only be described as scrutinising. They seemed to grow curious with Sunghoon's clear impatience and awkward movements, like he needed them to leave right now.
"Our driver won't mind us spending a few more moments with our son." Misun shut him up in the nicest way possible, leaving Sunghoon to inwardly groan.
"Actually, we wanted to invite you to dinner this Saturday." Sungwoo continued, only making Sunghoon's pain grow. "With Dae, of course. We haven't spent time together in quite a while."
Sunghoon quickly realised that his parents had come for one reason and one reason only - to make life as difficult as possible for him.
"I-I don't know if-"
"You made time for a trip, you can make time for us." Misun interrupted at Sunghoon's clear hesitance and even reluctance.
"But I'm..." Sunghoon looked towards Dae, who was equally speechless next to Heeseung. Sunghoon didn't know why but her eyes found Sunoo instead of him, and Sunghoon followed them.
The younger was staring at the floor, still hugged into Ni-ki's side but clearly distant as he nibbled on his bottom lip. Sunghoon didn't know how long he looked at Sunoo for before he was looking back at his parents, finding narrowed, confused eyes.
Sunghoon wanted to say no. He wanted to tell them that he was no longer with Dae, they were just friends and that's all they would be from now on. However, that meant tearing apart his entire life plan, his parents' expectations and demands of him. It would not only mean that, but it would mean telling them something had happened to break them up. Sunoo had happened.
And that would make everything so real. So permanent.
Sunghoon wanted to say no, he really did, but he was so scared.
