- "So, spill the tea," Utahime said, a mischievous glint in her eyes." What's been happening in your life all these years? You need to update me on e-ve-ry single detail, do you understand?"
Eliana and Utahime sat on her bed, a cup of tea in hand. They had sent the students to bed early, considering that the tournament would start the next day, at noon. They needed to be well rested, because it wasn't going to be easy.
Eliana chuckled, taking a sip of her tea before launching herself into a recount of her various adventures abroad. She told her about the places she had visited, the people she had met, and the challenges she had faced along the way.
Utahime listened intently, nodding along with every new detail.
- "And how does it feel to be back? Have you and Gojo caught up on all those years you've been gone? I remember back in high school you guys were inseparables. You were literally glued together. And, you know, I gotta say; I always thought he had a little crush on you."
Eliana's cheeks flushed slightly at Utahime's teasing remark. So she had noticed something.
Just like Yuji. And Suguru.
- "Gojo and I... I don't know honestly. It's... complicated."
Utahime's eyebrows raised with curiosity, her gaze fixing on Eliana with an expectant look.
- "Complicated? What do you mean?" she asked, setting her own tea aside to give Eliana her full attention.
The girl hesitated, swirling the tea in her cup as she tried to find the right words to convey the mix of emotions swirling within her.
- "Well, she began slowly, we did catch up, but... things felt different. At first. You know, we didn't exactly leave on the best terms. We eventually talked things out, and we were good and all until now, but then..."
Eliana paused, her thoughts drifting back to that afternoon by the pond.
- "Then... something happened," she continued. "We had this... moment."
Utahime leaned in closer, her eyes sparkling with curiosity.
- "What kind of moment?" she asked. "Oh my god, did you guys kiss?"
Eliana's cheeks flushed bright red at Utahime's teasing speculation. She shook her head, a nervous laugh escaping her lips.
- "No, it wasn't like that," she said, her voice tinged with a mixture of embarrassment and uncertainty. "It was... intense, but not in that way."
- "Intense how, then?"
Eliana bit her lip, her heart racing as she relived the moment in her mind.
-" It's hard to explain," she admitted. "But it felt like... like there was this undeniable connection between us. And this feeling in my chest... I don't know how to describe it. It was weird but... pleasant? Somehow? Oh my gosh I don't know, I'm lost!"
Utahime listened attentivly as Eliana struggled to put her feelings into words. Though she couldn't prevent the smile that formed at the corner of her lips. During high school, she had witnessed the two grow closer and closer, their undeniable chemistry palpable to anyone with eyes to see. Sure there was Suguru as well, but... Gojo and Eliana...
There was this tension, this thing between them. Which was obvious to anyone but the two, apparently.
And now, it seemed that they were finally on the brink of acknowledging what had been simmering beneath the surface all along, and Utahime couldn't be more excited.
- "You're not lost, Eliana," Utahime said gently, her smile widening into a grin. "You're just discovering something new and... unexpected about a relationship you've had with someone all along. That maybe this friendship, this bond you guys have shared all these years... Maybe there was something more, than you never explored."
Eliana's eyes widened at Utahime's words. She had never thought that her friendship with Gojo could evolve into something... more. Never.
But now, with that tension between them... She didn't know what to think anymore.
Utahime's expression softened, her hand reaching out to squeeze Eliana's reassuringly.
- "How do you feel about that?" she asked, her voice gentle. "You know like... the possibility that there may be more to your friendship."
Eliana took a moment to gather her thoughts.
- "I don't know," she confessed. "Part of me wants to explore it, to see where it leads. But another part of me is scared. Scared of... ruining what we have, you know. He's my best friend, the only one I have left."
Utahime nodded understandingly. She set her cup of tea on the bedside table and leaned back, sighing.
- "I understand. You must be very confused right now, and this situation with Gojo only adds to the emotional turmoil you two must be going through right now. I'm sorry, by the way. I can't imagine how you must be feeling."
Eliana frowned. What was she sorry for, exactly? Did she already know about the curse alliance? She was convinced no one had told her yet...
- "What do you mean," she asked, as she sat up on her bed.
Utahime looked away, not daring to meet her gaze.
- "Well, you know... With this week being the first anniversary of Suguru's passing. I know how close you guys were, so I can only imagine that this is not going to be easy for you..."
And with that simple sentence, it felt as if the ground had crumbled under Eliana's feet, as she sat there, paralyzed, her mind categorically refusing to process what Utahime had just said.
Suguru had... passed away?
