Eliana sat in the classroom. She had gone back to reading though all the reports she could possibly find. That mysterious curse was still all she could think about, but even after hours searching, she still couldn't find anything on a curse ability that could bypass the Six Eyes. And especially, one that could make an entire temple vanish out of thin air, just like that. Oh, and did she mention that the curse also knew her name?
It was all way too confusing.
A knock on the door interrupted her thoughts, and Eliana let out a small smile as the blue eyed sorcerer stepped into the classroom.
- "Hey."
- "Hey," the man replied. He leaned against the door frame, his sunglasses up on his nose, as always.
- "Itadori told me you guys talked, earlier."
He wasn't gonna admit that the man had been observing them from the other side of the training fields.
- "We did", Eliana smiled. "With Kugusaki and the Fushiguro kid as well. They're nice. They kinda remind me of our trio dynamic, back then."
Gojo nodded, hands in his pockets. He could see it too, they were like replica of their old self.
- "They're great kids. But I mean, they learn from the best, after all."
Eliana rolled her eyes.
- "Yeah, you definitely haven't changed. Always so humble."
Gojo chuckled, a playful glint in his eyes.
- "What can I say? It's just the truth."
Eliana grinned, shaking her head in mock disbelief.
- "Well, I suppose I can't argue with that."
The man smiled, as he got closer to where the girl was sitting. He loomed over her shoulder.
- "What are you doing?"
Eliana let out a loud sigh, closing the report on her table.
- "Trying to find some clues or informations. But spoiler: it's not very productive," she admitted.
- "I can see that," Gojo remarked, glancing at the scattered papers on her desk. "Mind if I join you?"
Eliana gestured for him to sit beside her.
- "Suit yourself."
Gojo sat on the chair next to her. He went on to grab a report, but paused for a second, before speaking.
- "Hey, Eliana... You know, about what I said on the mission..."
Eliana's heart skipped a beat, her stomach flipping nervously.
Gojo hesitated for a moment, his gaze flickering away before returning to meet hers.
- "I'm... sorry for what I said. When I implied that it was your fault if we lost contact. I'm the one who didn't come out of my room on that day, so I had no rights to blame it all on you. I just wanted to say that, now if you want we can just focus on the mission and put this whole thing behind us-"
-"No I-"
She paused a moment before continuing, taking in a deep breath, while he looked at her, his expression puzzled.
Here they were.
- "I don't want to put everything behind."
Gojo nodded, changing the way he was seated so that he was now facing her.
- "I'm the one who left," she confessed, looking down on her desk. "I should have concerted with you before taking that decision all by myself. But on the moment, I just... I needed to get away. From all of it. And I didn't consider you in the equation. And I am sorry. It was selfish of me to leave you to deal with all of it on your own. I just... I wanted to escape. I couldn't bear staying in that place, with all the memories of him while he wasn't there anymore..."
Gojo listened quietly as Eliana spoke, his expression softening with understanding. They were finally talking about it. After all these years. They were finally having that discussion. The one they both had needed so much.
He reached out to gently place a hand on hers.
- "Don't apologize", he interjected gently. "We were both trying to handle Suguru's departure in our own way, and we made decisions based on what we thought was best for us at the time. It was your way of coping with the situation, and you prioritized yourself, as you should have."
- "But still. I left you all alone in a moment where we should have been there for one another."
He bit the inside of his cheek.
Yes. She had. She had left him. And for years he had selfishly hated her for that. But at the same time, he knew he couldn't blame her. And now, years after, he understood. And in that very moment, it was himself that he hated. For ever feeling this way.
He squeezed her hand gently.
- "We've both grown since then, Eliana. And part of that growth means forgiving ourselves for the past and moving forward. Together."
The girl locked her green eyes on him. And smiled. A genuine smile.
There it was. Their bond that had been shattered all those years ago. That sincerity. That feeling...
She had missed it. Way too much. And she probably had missed it even more ever since she had been back at Jujutsu High. Acting with Gojo as if they were strangers, or colleagues, at most, never felt right.
But now, as they sat there, facing each other, she didn't see a stranger.
She saw her friend. Her goofy, cheerful, affectionate friend. Yeah sure, cocky and confident; but that was part of the Gojo deal.
It was a comforting feeling, one that reminded her of the bond they shared. And one that gave her the hope that maybe, things could go back to the way they once were, between the two of them.
- "I'm glad we got that out of our chest, "she smiled. "Finally."
- "Me too," Gojo replied, returning her smile. "It feels like a weight has been lifted off our shoulders, doesn't it?"
Eliana nodded, feeling a sense of relief wash over her. For so long, she had carried the guilt and regret of leaving Gojo behind without a proper explanation. And throughout all those years she had spent abroad, she had hated the fact that the two had completely lost contact. Loosing one best friend was already enough. And yet by hoping on that plane, she had practically lost the second one.
And while nothing could possibly make up for the time that had passed, they could only go forward.
- "Okay then, now that this is all cleared up, how about we go out tonight. To like... clear our head from the mission and stuff. And also... you know. Celebrate the fact that we're friends again?"
Eliana smiled.
- "I'd like that", she replied sincerely. "It's about time we catch up properly."
- "Sakura's diner? We could go there for 7pm, let's say? My treat."
- "Well, that's sounds like a plan then, Gojo."
