"Toto, we're not in Kanas anymore." Clary says as she Jace, Leya and Meliorn walk through the Seelie glade.
"Welcome to the Seelie Glade, Clary Fairchild. The remotest edge of it." Meliorn tells her.
"How did we get here?" Clary asks.
"There are entrances all through the mundane world." Jace tells her.
"You just have to know where to look." Meliorn says.
"Why did we have to come here to find our father?" Clary asks.
"You ask a lot of questions." Leya tells Clary and Clary rolls her eyes and nudges her.
"Because of your necklace. It's a portal shard." Meliorn says.
"Tell us something we don't know." Jace says.
"Don't be rude." Leya tells Jace.
"How does it work?" Meliorn asks Clary.
"When I touch the crystal and I think of someone, I can see where they are." Clary tells him.
"I'm curious, Shadowhunter, who knows so much about Portals, did you never wonder why this portal shard doesn't behave the way normal Portals do?" Meliorn says to Jace.
"Normal Portals can only take you to places you've been. I guess I never really thought about it." Jace says.
"I have." Leya says.
"I guess Isabelle and Leya are the smart ones in the family. Your Portal shard works the way it does because it's a piece of a Portal from another dimension." Meliorn says as he stops walking and faces the Shadowhunters.
"That actually makes so much sense now." Leya says.
"Another dimension?" Clary asks.
"You're saying there's a Portal in some other universe that can take us to anyone if we just think of them?" Jace asks as he crosses his arms.
"If you can find the only Portal still standing in that dimension...it will take you to your father." Meliorn says and then turns around and starts walking again. ••• "These trees are where the alternate dimensions intersect with the Seelie realm." Meliorn tells them.
"How is it possible that the clave doesn't know about your dimensional doorways?" Jace asks.
"They are our most guarded secret. We are their protectors. Only Seelies know of their existence." Meliorn tells Jace.
